Times Square crash victim was 18-year-old Portage woman

Francis Olson | 19 May, 2017, 17:39

She said she saw flames coming from the vehicle and started hurrying the children away as people scattered around them. "I don't know if I'm going to sleep well tonight, from what I saw", he said.

It isn't clear when Rojas might get a lawyer.

The photographer who snapped this striking picture had no idea the jumping, screaming man in his frame was responsible for the scene of carnage in Times Square.

The driver has been identified as Richard Rojas, 26. Details of the circumstances were not immediately available.

The pedestrian who was killed, an 18-year-old woman, was a tourist from MI, authorities said.

Rojas enlisted in the Navy in 2011 and was an electrician's mate fireman apprentice, according to the Navy.

His most recent base was at Jacksonville in Florida but he was discharged three years ago after being court-martialled for reasons that have not been disclosed.

Navy records show he spent two months in a military prison in Charleston, South Carolina, in the summer of 2013 but do not specify why. They don't indicate why.

Broadway shows would go ahead as planned on Thursday evening in the many theatres in the area, organizers said in a statement. She was visiting New York City from MI, sources said.

The vehicle ended up tilted on its left tires at West 45th Street, where street barriers stopped it, O'Neill said.

Evan Stemmer, 25, who was visiting NY from Detroit, said he was returning to his hotel with a friend when they heard the sirens and saw the arrest.

Rojas, a USA citizen and Navy veteran, has a criminal record including previous DWIs. They say he was captured at the scene and arrested.

"He is a family man, a hard worker, a true friend".

Commissioner Daniel Nigro of the New York Fire Department said all of the injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment. "He's a United States citizen and a former member of the armed forces with the United States Navy", de Blasio told reporters. He says Rojas was posting "crazy stuff" online that has since been taken down. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

The driver of the auto ran over pedestrians in the times square in NY, told the police that he heard voices and thought I would die. Initial tests came back negative for alcohol, the law enforcement sources told ABC News.

While investigators were uncertain late Thursday whether Rojas was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash, an NYPD source shot down early reports he had taken K2, a potent version of synthetic marijuana that can cause irrational behavior.

Terrorism isn't suspected in the crash.

Richard Rojas is escorted from the 7th precinct by New York City Police officers after being processed in connection with the speeding vehicle that struck pedestrians on a sidewalk in Times Square in New York City, on Thu., May 18, 2017.

That was the end of the incident, after Rojas allegedly drove the wrong way three and a half blocks up Seventh Avenue on the sidewalk.
