Trump Administration Upholds Iran Sanctions Waiver, Keeping Nuclear Deal Alive

Kenny Thornton | 19 May, 2017, 15:57

Wendy Sherman, who served as undersecretary of State for political affairs from 2011 to 2015, said that the nuclear deal allows the use "all options" if Iran were to backpedal on the deal.

The US Treasury Department Wednesday announced unrelated, new sanctions in connection to Iran's ballistic missile program.

Every 90 days, the US president must certify for Congress that Iran is fully compliant with the JCPOA to ensure that the economic sanctions can continue to be waivered. It was renewed today.

In a statement, USA ambassador to the Middle East Stuart Jones said the United States would continue to waive sanctions that were lifted under the Iran's deal.

Lawrence Korb, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and former United States assistant secretary of defence, said the Trump administration's continuation of the nuclear deal is similar to the situation with China.

Sherman was asked about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also had harsh words for the deal on a recent trip to Washington.

Iranians are set to vote Friday in the country's presidential election.

To remind you, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is the title of dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran designed and signed by President Obama. The dual track sanctions policy shows that the major review of U.S. Iranian policy ordered by the president is not complete, and for the foreseeable future, Iran will continue to enjoy the economic benefits of sanctions relief. He was sanctioned for his involvement in Iran's solid-fuel ballistic missile programme. "The United States will remain vigilant when it comes to Iran".

However, the US Treasury issued fresh sanctions against specific officials and a Chinese business with links to Iran's missile programme.

The Trump administration will have to waive more sanctions next month, should it wish to maintain the historic nuclear deal.

US President Donald Trump's administration chose to stick with the existing nuclear deal with Iran on Wednesday, renewing a waiver of nuclear-related sanctions.

But Raisi, considered a potential successor to Khamenei, has gained ground by accusing Rouhani of not capitalizing on the agreement and, by extension, blaming him for the deepening poverty and rising unemployment afflicting a country that is awash with oil deals since nuclear sanctions were lifted.

Since Mr Trump's inauguration, his administration has also continued to certify to Congress that Iran is upholding its part of the deal, which it must do every 90 days.

Also under USA sanctions hit the Iranian company Iranian Novini System Management. Additionally, this decision also seems to be a demonstration of the extent to which Trump's foreign policy advisers, including Defense Secretary Mattis, Secretary of State Tillerson, and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, have apparently managed to moderate numerous positions that Trump had taken on the campaign trail.
