Trump again blows up a careful White House statement with a tweet

On Wednesday, the Justice Department appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to lead the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

Trump also suggested that former U.S. presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton had committed acts that should have been investigated by a special prosecutor. The lone adviser to appear on TV afterward, Sebastian Gorka on Fox News' Sean Hannity show, called it "dishonest news" and then spoke at length about the need to hunt down leakers. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country.

US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced the appointment of Mueller on Wednesday, following US media reports earlier this week about an attempt by Trump in February to end an FBI investigation of former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

Following a week of nonstop bombshell reports regarding President Donald Trump, former FBI Director James Comey and the leak of highly classified information to Russian diplomats, the House Democrats are going to hold a news conference to discuss all of these topics and chart a path forward.

Late on Wednesday the Department of Justice appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the investigation into questions of Russian collusion.

The mixed messages come as rumors have swirled about a possible shake-up of White House communications staff.
