Trump disclosed Israeli supplied intelligence on ISIS to Russian Federation

Frank Williams | 19 May, 2017, 10:36

Lawmakers on Tuesday called for more information after reports that President Donald Trump asked then-FBI Director James Comey to drop an investigation of former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The development comes as the Trump administration faces questions over why and how the president fired Comey last week as the FBI was investigating whether Trump's presidential campaign was connected to Russian meddling in the election.

The White House has denied the allegation in a statement. In February, Flynn was forced to resign as Trump's security advisor fo hiding meetings with Russian ambassador in Washington DC.

Mr Comey prepared the account immediately after his meeting with the president, and sent copies of the memo to Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership and to some of his closest associates.

"We're a long ways from a conviction - the fact that we simply have a headline in The New York Times", Republican Representative Trey Gowdy said on Fox News.

When the report burst forth alleging that President Donald Trump had revealed highly classified information to Russian diplomats, the White House quickly dispatched Trump's national security adviser to declare that the story "as reported is false".

The White House has repeatedly crossed lines that other administrations have been reluctant to cross when discussing politically charged criminal investigations.

The day after that Comey met with Trump in the Oval Office and wrote a memo to record the meeting because he was uneasy about the president's request, according to a person who was given a copy of the document.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Trump told Comey, according to the memo.

The prospect of a new arm's length confrontation with Comey might also be causing Trump to second guess himself after suddenly firing the former director last week, then admitting on television that he did so because he was frustrated about a Russian Federation probe he has called a waste of taxpayer money.

Criminally speaking, obstructing justice applies to a variety of scenarios - like threatening a juror, retaliating against a witness, or impeding a grand jury proceeding - and Trump's alleged request would not fit neatly into any of them, legal experts said. "It's got to happen", said Republican Senator Bob Corker. You can't let them get you down. "I love my children; they can not have the nuclear codes", writes The New York Times. "I don't think he meant to obstruct justice". Mr Nixon resigned office in 1974, engulfed by the Watergate scandal. "There are other memos". "This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey".

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said if the reports are true, the Trump's brazen attempt to shut down the FBI investigation is an "assault on the rule of law" that is fundamental to the American democracy.

"We are absolutely at the edge of obstruction of justice". Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told reporters.

The person said the goal of the memos was to keep a record of encounters Comey found odd or troubling.

"I have to say yes simply because obstruction of justice is such a serious offense". "I'm not going to take a memo, I want the guy to come in".

During the meeting, the President was said to disclose intelligence be about an Islamic State plot.

On Capitol Hill, meanwhile, three congressional committees, all led by Republicans, confirmed they wanted to hear from Comey.

"Maybe they're busy", offered Burr, the North Carolina Republican who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee.

In a separate letter, the Democrat members on the House Oversight and Judiciary committees called for a joint investigation and a public hearing of James Comey.

Stephen Slick, a former CIA operations officer and now director of the Intelligence Studies Project at the University of Texas-Austin, said rank-and-file intelligence officers remain apolitical and focused on their work. "The best way to get to the bottom of it is for him to testify". A little more than a week after he fired Comey, Comey is firing back.
