Trump says he's 'very close' to naming a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he could name a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director by next week before he leaves on his first foreign trip since taking office.

Trump came under criticism for firing Comey as he was supervising the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and any possible links between the Trump and Russian Federation during the campaign. Trump, sent to embark on his first overseas visit as president Friday, confirmed that former Sen.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director appointed by President Barack Obama has said during hearings that there is no evidence Russian hackers changed any vote tallies in the election while maintaining they are highly confident the country interfered with the goal of getting Trump elected. He also said former Connecticut Sen.

Trump confirmed when he was asked if Lieberman, the Democrat-turned-independent senator from CT was a top candidate, CNN reported. On Thursday, Trump said Lieberman was one of the finalists to replace James Comey. Previously, the president had expressed interest in Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, for the post.

Trump met with Lieberman on Wednesday and found him "agreeable".

First, it's crucial to distinguish between a "special counsel", such as this is, and an "independent counsel". Flynn, Trump's fired national security adviser, is a key figure in the Trump-Russia investigation.

Among their concerns was Lieberman's past praise of Michael Flynn, Trump's first national security adviser, who was sacked in February after misleading officials about his talks with Russian officials. Comey was leading the investigation into whether Trump's campaign and his associates worked with Russian Federation to swing the 2016 election. Lieberman added that McFarland "and General Mike Flynn will form a very strong leadership team at the National Security Council". Lieberman testified in support of Sessions at his January confirmation hearing.

Lieberman was Democrat Al Gore's vice presidential nominee in 2000 and unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004.

Lieberman spoke at the 2008 Republican National Convention on behalf of his friend, Arizona Sen. He has served as co-chairman of No Labels, a centrist group that promotes bipartisanship.
