When President Trump ultimately makes a decision and nominates a new FBI Director, that person will head to the Senate for confirmation. They have argued that the White House's explanation - that Comey was terminated due to his handling over the Clinton investigation - meant Trump could have fired him months ago.

Critics have assailed Trump for abruptly dismissing Comey, who was leading the agency's investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election, and possible ties between Moscow and the Trump presidential campaign.

"They've been vetted over their lifetime, essentially, but very well known, highly respected, really talented people", the president said.

President Trump's alluding Friday to having taped his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey has already propelled the purported talks to the top of WikiLeaks' wish list.

"I think the president looked at the situation and made a decision that the president can make", said Paul Ryan. Thirty two percent of survey respondents said they had no opinion of Trump's decision to fire America's chief law enforcement officer.

If appointed, she would be the FBI's first female director.

The administration also says several current Federal Bureau of Investigation and intelligence officials were being interviewed for the interim position, including Special Agent in Charge Adam Lee, who returned to DOJ for a second interview Saturday.

November 13, 2016: In a CBS "60 Minutes" broadcast after the election, Trump says he hasn't decided whether to keep Comey.

He deliberately kept them in the dark because Trump was afraid the news would leak, which - to be perfectly fair - it absolutely would have.

The White House had no immediate comment.

Donald Trump has refused to deny recording his meetings with former FBI Director James Comey.

Trump argued the hostility he feels from the press and because he's such an active president that his spokespeople can not keep up with him are reasons to consider getting rid of press briefings. In announcing the firing, the White House circulates a scathing memo, written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, criticizing Comey's handling of the Clinton probe.
