Some Middle East airlines complained to the International Civil Aviation Organization that they had been unduly penalized by the original 10-country ban.

A United States ban on now ubiquitous laptops could cause havoc with more than 3,250 flights a week scheduled to leave European Union airports for the U.S. this summer, according to industry data. In that incident, a bomb concealed inside a laptop that had passed through airport security detonated inside the cabin of an airliner shortly after takeoff.

And while no final decision has been made yet, according to the sources, it's coming soon.

As it became known to Fox News, U.S. officials suggested the airlines to "be ready" to ensure that the ban on transportation electronics to be distributed on non-stop flights to the United States from other regions, including Europe.

Officials did not say when a new ban might be imposed.

While the ban is highly anticipated, Reuters reports that United States officials are reviewing how to ensure that lithium batteries stored in luggage holds do not catch fire or explode in mid-air.

But a USA official disagreed with that assessment. Top EU and USA officials will hold talks today over a possible U.S. ban on carry-on computers on European flights to the United States, an EU spokeswoman said. "The intelligence is pointing to something else beyond that".

British Airways referred calls to the U.K. Department for Transport, which said it doesn't discuss security measures or comment on speculation.

In 2016, 30 million people flew to the United States from Europe, according to U.S. Transportation Department data.

Any expansion of the ban could impact USA carriers such as United Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc and American Airlines Group.

The specifics of the restrictions under consideration are not yet clear.

European aviation security experts are meeting in Brussels on Thursday to consider possible responses to any extension of the ban.

"In a sense, this is the latest chapter in a debate that has raging in Washington since 9/11 - how do we find the right balance between securing the air travel system from terrorist attack and facilitating the movement of travelers through that system", Peck said.

USA airlines have been pushing Homeland Security to find less disruptive alternatives, according to a source familiar with the discussions. Approved medical devices are exempt, but must go through additional screening.
