Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday he will resign from Congress next month, a move that calls into question the future of the House Oversight Committee's investigation of President Donald Trump and his campaign's ties with Russian Federation.

The House Oversight Committee he heads is one of several congressional panels looking into aspects of Russia's alleged attempts to influence the US presidential election.

In a statement, Chaffetz said that he had always meant for his time in Congress to be temporary, and that he's looking forward to spending more time with his family. In February, he met a packed townhall in his Utah district, filled with constituents chanting, "do your job".

On Tuesday, Chaffetz demanded that the Federal Bureau of Investigation turn over all documents in its possession concerning communications between Trump and James Comey, whom Trump fired last week as Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

The Republican says he hasn't yet spoken to fired FBI Director James Comey about his invitation for Comey to testify next week at an oversight committee hearing.

A spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan said that it is "appropriate" for the House Oversight Committee to request the memo that was reportedly written by James Comey, the ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation chief, and claimed that President Trump once asked him to end the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

This came after The New York Times reported that Comey wrote memos detailing his interactions with the president.

Chaffetz recently asked the acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to hand over any information related to communication between Trump and Comey.

"Nobody that I know of, even the reporter, has not actually seen those documents", he said on "Good Morning America". But Chaffetz himself has questioned the memo's authenticity.

"If this memo exists, I need to see it right away", Chaffetz told The Associated Press in a phone interview earlier this week, adding, "If we need a subpoena, we'll do it". "That's just not conclusive evidence".
