White House knew sacked adviser was under investigation

Frank Williams | 19 May, 2017, 09:10

The Trump administration has been plagued by questions over Flynn, who was sacked only 24 days into the role, and he's a key figure in ongoing investigations by Congress and the FBI.

Mr. Flynn's disclosure, on January 4, was first made to the transition team's chief lawyer, Donald F. McGahn II, who is now the White House counsel. Trump said of the investigation swirling around his presidency. "He did not want to be National Security Adviser", Michael Ledeen, a friend of the retired Army general, told The Daily Beast on Thursday.

Flynn resigned from his position as Trump's national security advisor in February.

Prior to Flynn making this decision, the Flynn Intel Group received $530,000 in payments from a Turkish-owned company based in the Netherlands and in March registered as a foreign agent with the Justice Department, acknowledging that the work may have benefited the Turkish government, according to foreign agent registration paperwork filed with the department.

It took Trump 18 days after that Yates-McGahn meeting to fire Flynn.

After news of the calls became public, Flynn misled Pence about what he had discussed with Kislyak, telling him that the two had only exchanged holiday pleasantries.

In congressional testimony, the acting FBI director, Andrew G. McCabe, has confirmed the existence of a "highly significant" investigation into possible collusion between Trump's associates and Russian operatives to sway the presidential election.

Why? Why would Trump name as his top national security adviser a man he knew was under federal investigation, a man he had been warned against by a sitting president of the United States?

With Flynn, it's a different story. Even though he fired him, Trump has continued to heap praise on the retired lieutenant general, has defended his communications with Russian Federation and possibly attempted to obstruct justice in order to clear his former adviser's name. That deference likely gave Flynn a far wider berth than the average staffer bringing bad news down on Trump.

Loyalty, while not a virtue he seems to practice often himself, is one of the qualities Trump admires most in others. He was a frequent presence on the campaign trail and famously led the Republican National Convention in chants of "Lock her up!" in reference to Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. Trump liked that loyalty. Everything else paled in comparison to that.

Now, the circumstances surrounding Flynn's tenure appear even more murky.

This week, at least, it appears that Flynn's legal troubles have taken a back seat, as President Trump's purported efforts to protect Flynn from scrutiny have landed Trump, once again, in the spotlight. Everyone sees that. Everyone, it seems, except Trump.
