Chinese media blame the United States of America for WannaCry ransomware cyber-attack

Ransomware Attack Some ATMs Remained Shut Across India to Escape Attack From Kill Switch To Bitcoin, 'WannaCry' Showing Signs Of Amateur Flaws

As the worm, known as WannaCry, has been contained, more free time has opened up in which to argue and assign blame beyond the anonymous hackers who used leaked NSA code to assemble the virus, and whatever party made a decision to turn it into ransomware.

The US National Security Agency (NSA) should shoulder some blame for the attack, which targets vulnerabilities in Microsoft Corp systems and has infected some 30,000 Chinese organisations as of Saturday, the China Daily said.

The WannaCry ransomware attack that started Friday and infected hundreds of thousands of computers has been linked to hackers aligned with North Korea, according to cybersecurity researchers.

It effectively takes the computer hostage and demands a $300 ransom, to be paid in 72 hours with bitcoin.

Other computers potentially at risk are those that have not been receiving regular software updates known as "patches" that Microsoft distributes regularly via Internet. "This ransomworm specifically used Microsoft SMB vulnerability MS17-010 to spread internally", which is the same vulnerability the NSA utilized for a couple years and was recently exposed via the January NSA tools leak. Proprietor of Devine Computers Taleigao, Ashely Delaney says: "Ransom attacks were always present on the internet and hackers through phishing (a fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to induce individuals to reveal personal information) and other methods". (Mac users have been unaffected, he said.) Windows XP was released in 2001.

The tools behind the attack originated within the NSA.

Using antivirus software will at least protect you from the most basic, well-known viruses by scanning your system against the known fingerprints of these pests. But in this case, according to Kaspersky Lab, the shared code was removed from the versions of WannaCry that are now circulating, which reduces the likelihood of such a "false flag" attempt at misdirection.

The impact of WannaCry ransomware attack has been limited to five or six isolated instances so far and there are no reports of any substantial disruption to India's IT backbone, the government said today. But these two agendas, of militarism, absolute secrecy, and software profit maximization create an environment that allows something like WannaCry to stomp all over the globe, hobbling hospitals and train stations in its wake.

Britain's National Health Services first sounded the ransomware alarm Friday.

Spanish firm Telefonica, French automaker Renault, the USA -based delivery service FedEx and the German railway Deutsche Bahn were among those affected.

Microsoft patched this hole in March for modern versions of Windows. The best course of action is to contact an IT or Cyber Security professional to assist you in analyzing and minimizing the attack. Even though Microsoft no longer provides updates for Windows XP, it is still widely used in Europe and Asia.

But per Microsoft's point, things aren't going according to plan recently, and our nation's secret keepers have been having a lot of trouble keeping their computer weapons away from the likes of the Shadow Brokers and Wikileaks.

As for Microsoft, some intelligence agency experts questioned its NSA criticism, saying it's unreasonable for the company to ask governments to stop using its products as a way to attack and monitor enemies.

Smith says cyberweapons require a new approach, and governments must "consider the damage to civilians that comes from hoarding these vulnerabilities and the use of these exploits".
