JULIAN ASSANGE: Sweden Drops Rape Investigation Against Europe's 'Baba Jukwa'

JULIAN ASSANGE: Sweden Drops Rape Investigation Against Europe's 'Baba Jukwa' JULIAN ASSANGE: Sweden Drops Rape Investigation Against Europe's 'Baba Jukwa'

Swedish prosecutors have announced they are dropping the country's rape investigation of Julian Assange.

Assange, 45, has always denied the rape allegations made against him.

He feared Sweden would hand him over to the United States to face prosecution over WikiLeaks' publication of thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents in one of the largest information leaks in US history.

Sweden's director of public prosecutions, Marianne Ny, filed a request to the Stockholm District Court to revoke his arrest warrant, ending a seven-year stand-off.

American authorities have prepared charges to seek Arrange's arrest, CNN reported, citing US officials familiar with the matter.

British police said Friday that Assange will be arrested if he leaves the Ecuadorean embassy.

"The UK has refused to confirm or deny whether it has already received a U.S. extradition warrant for Julian Assange".

Considering that all possibilities to take the investigation further have been exhausted it no longer appears "proportional to uphold the decision about detention of Julian Assange in absentia and maintaining the European detention order".

The long-running case against Mr. Assange had suffered several setbacks.

A statement from the prosecutor said: "Director of Public Prosecution, Ms Marianne Ny, has today chose to discontinue the investigation regarding suspected rape (lesser degree) by Julian Assange".

Ny told reporters that prosecutors had been unable to make a full assessment of the case and were not making a finding on whether Assange was guilty or innocent of the allegations. It does not clear Assange's name, however, and some experts say it puts him into an even more precarious legal situation if the US has - as some suspect - a sealed indictment for his arrest.

"The first thing that needs to be done, presumably, is to secure guarantees from the British authorities that he will not be arrested on other grounds", Melinda Taylor, one of Mr. Assange's lawyers, told the Swedish news agency TT, the newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported.

Ecuador's government asked the United Kingdom to give Mr Assange safe passage in order to allow him asylum in the South American nation. "Focus now moves to United Kingdom".

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says his legal team will contact United Kingdom officials to seek a way forward in resolving in resolving his status.

"Now that all appeals are exhausted I expect that the United Kingdom and Sweden will comply with their worldwide obligations and set me free", Mr Assange said following the ruling. It is not clear if that may change now that the investigation has been dropped. WikiLeaks also had a provocative role in the 2016 USA presidential campaign when it published emails written by Hillary Clinton's campaign officials.

However if Assange were to return to Sweden before the statute of limitations for the suspected offenses expires in August 2020, the investigation could be reopened, she said.

Russia's role remains the subject of multiple investigations by congressional intelligence committees and the FBI, which has said it's looking into whether any associates of Trump had contact or colluded with Russian government operatives.

Ms Ny said the motive for her decision was that there is no reason to believe the decision to surrender Mr Assange to Sweden can be executed in the foreseeable future.

British police kept up round-the-clock guard outside the embassy until December 2015, when the operation was scaled back, in part because of the cost, which had exceeded 11 million pounds (over $17.5 million at the time). She was freed Wednesday, having had her sentence commuted by former President Barack Obama before he left office.
