A British spokesman for Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement that May "warmly congratulates President-elect Macron on his election success".

France's economic malaise, especially high unemployment, had undermined the popularity of outgoing Socialist President Francois Hollande to the point where he decided not even to run again as a candidate.

Some hailed Macron's defeat of far-right candidate Marine Le Pen as "three-nil" after moderate politicians also beat extremists in Austria and the Netherlands in recent elections.

Macron and Hollande lay a wreath at Arc de Triomphe in Paris, May 8. (Forward!) is tweaking its name as it prepares a list of candidates. Macron is working to obtain a majority in the lower house of parliament in June elections. "New opportunities will now open up for the proactive agenda needed to strengthen the European Union, including more jobs and fair working conditions, a stronger climate policy and a functioning asylum system in which everyone takes responsibility", said Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven.

Here are five things to know about French president-elect Emmanuel Macron.

Macron's victory is a relief for Germany, the main defender of the European Union against rising anti-establishment sentiment on the right and left of the political spectrum.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he wanted to work together with Macron on a "progressive agenda" to "promote worldwide security, increase collaboration in science and technology, and create good, middle-class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic".

En Marche! was founded by Macron in April 2016, a few months before he resigned from his post of the minister of the economy. Macron "must stretch out his hand to the millions of voters of the right and of the center who were not represented in the runoff", Le Maire told RTL radio.

In her concession speech on May 7, Le Pen portrayed her loss as a victory of "globalists" over "patriots" and announced plans to establish a new political association that will take part in the elections. Russian Federation is also accused of launching hacking attacks on Macron's campaign in an effort to support Le Pen's candidacy.

"I will fight with all my strength against the divisions that are undermining us", he said.

May said that whoever forms the next government "will be sitting down and talking to Monsieur Macron and others about how that system has worked, both the for benefit of France and the UK".
