New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu says taking down a prominent statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee will allow his city to "heal and become the city we always should have been".

A worker in protective gear takes down an Army National Guard flag from the statue of Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard during the statue's removal from the entrance to City Park in New Orleans, Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

It took nearly 7 hours for workers to strap the statue of confederate general PGT Beauregard and his horse to a crane and lift it onto a flatbed truck.

Earlier this month, dozens of supporters of the monuments clashed with hundreds of demonstrators near the site of the Robert E. Lee statue.

In a press scrum, Landrieu told the media that the Confederate monuments, which he is in the final stages of removing, "have run people out of the city".

The Beauregard monument was unveiled to a 17-gun salute the afternoon of November 11, 1915, by Hilda Beauregard, a granddaughter of the Confederate general, according to a report in The Times-Picayune the next morning.

The equestrian statue of Confederate Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard honors the military leader who died in New Orleans in 1893.

AAP seeks all-party probe in the alleged tampering of EVMs
Kejriwal has repeatedly claimed that the AAP's poll debacles have something to do with tampering of EVMs. The party alleged that the Commission was in denial mode over the credibility of the voting machines.

The statue was the third out of four Confederate statues that was slated for removal in the city.

There has been, however, a growing crime problem in New Orleans.

Due to the widely known intimidation, threats, and violence, serious safety concerns remain. The city already has removed one of the Confederacy's only president and a memorial to a white rebellion against a biracial Reconstruction-era government in the city.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu called for the removal of the monument in the wake of the 2015 massacre of nine black parishioners at a SC church. City Park issued a statement Tuesday evening saying that it doesn't have any information indicating that it owns the statue, rather than the city.

Some said regardless of what the statue represents, it's a work of art. Three depict individuals deeply influential within the Confederacy, and the fourth honors an insurrection of mostly Confederate veterans who battled against the City's racially integrated police and state militia. Crews also took down a monument memorializing a deadly white supremacist uprising in 1874. It is the third monument to come down in the city. It was commissioned by the Jefferson Davis Memorial Association. New Orleans was one of the largest ports active in the slave trade, where thousands of souls "were bought, sold and shipped up the Mississippi River to lives of forced labor, of misery, of rape and torture", he said.

The Monumental Task Committee, in perhaps its most strongly-worded statement since the removal of the statues began, said the statue was of perhaps the most historically-significant Creole who ever lived. "Statues of this type are tangible symbols of a state of mind which was powerful and pervasive throughout the South well into the twentieth century and some would say even today".
