Russian Federation probe 'divides' the country

Kenny Thornton | 20 May, 2017, 00:46

Trump went on to dismiss as "totally ridiculous" the notion that he himself may have committed a prosecutable - or even impeachable - offence in recent months, as argued by some critics who suspect him of obstructing the FBI's probe.

President Donald Trump's close circle of advisers met Thursday in Washington to discuss the hiring of a personal team of attorneys to represent him through the special counsel's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Former FBI Director James Comey, who had previously led the investigation, was sacked by Trump on May 9.

Meanwhile, at home, other investigations into Russian Federation will move forward.

A lawyer for fired National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has informed the Senate Intelligence Committee he will not honor its subpoena for private documents. Richard Burr of North Carolina.

A self-described friend of Comey's wrote in a public blog post on Thursday that Comey had told him that he had rebuffed a Trump request for loyalty by promising only honesty. Burr says the panel's members are not surprised and says, "We'll figure out on Gen. Flynn what the next step, if any, is". He added that he was thinking of the "Russia thing" when he did so.

In a series of tweets earlier Thursday morning, Trump called the appointment of a special counsel 'the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!'

Trump is responding to the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead a probe of allegations that Trump's campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the election. Trump later deleted and retweeted that statement to correct the spelling of "counsel".

He did not provide examples or evidence of any alleged "illegal acts". But acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe told Congress last week that Comey "enjoyed broad support within the FBI and still does today".

Afterward, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told reporters that "everything he said was that you need to treat this investigation as if it may be a criminal investigation".

This was one of several interactions that Comey believed jeopardized the FBI's independence, the Times reports, and he instructed the president on the proper way to receive details about investigations: have the White House counsel send inquiries to the Department of Justice.
