Sen. John Cornyn turns down FBI Director job

Cornyn, who the officials say was intrigued by the idea and initially interested, ultimately withdrew from consideration after a number of his colleagues said they believed Trump should shy away from picking a GOP politician.

At this point, it's far from a sure-thing strategy - while there is no shortage of Republicans who have expressed problems with how and when James Comey was sacked from the FBI's top spot, there has been no rush to embrace Democratic calls for a special counsel.

On Monday, South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy announced that he, too, removed himself from consideration.

A source familiar with Cornyn's thinking said the senator felt "obligated" to consider the job because his friend, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, asked him to. The latest involved firing the FBI director leading the investigation into Russian meddling in the USA election (and possible collusion by the Trump campaign), and then the president outing an important intelligence source to Russian visitors in the Oval Office.

Trump, who abruptly fired Comey Tuesday, appears poised to act quickly on finding his replacement, which will require Senate confirmation.

"My suspicion is he may be ready for a new challenge; he's been in the Senate now for quite a while", said Vanderbilt University law professor Brian Fitzpatrick, who worked as Cornyn's special counsel on the Supreme Court nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

If confirmed, his role as Senate Majority Whip would be up for grabs. But Trump has remained leery of Ayotte, who publicly broke with him during his presidential campaign and criticized him, according to people close to the White House. "I am excited that he is the type of candidate President Trump is considering for such an important position", said Ratcliffe.

"I think the likelihood of Republican defections for Cornyn is really low", Mackowiak said. Cornyn would be a popular choice, but Sen.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska was the first Republican senator on Wednesday to suggest a special prosecutor was needed to investigate the Russian Federation allegations.
