Trump tells Russians Comey was a 'nut job'

Kenny Thornton | 20 May, 2017, 02:11

In a late-breaking story from the New York Times on Thursday night, reporter Michael Schmidt noted how James Comey was repeatedly approached by Donald Trump and his associates, in an apparent bid to develop a congenial relationship between the president and the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

He leapt to make the point again at a joint news conference with President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, describing the development as a distraction.

The briefing came a day after Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian Federation in that country's attempts to improperly influence the 2016 election.

He also flatly denied he had asked the country's top law-enforcement officer, Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, to shut down a portion of the Russian Federation investigation in February.

In tweets early Thursday morning, Trump argued he was being unfairly singled out for investigation, calling Mueller's appointment "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history".

"I wish the president would stop tweeting", said Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) told The Hill, potentially voicing the concerns of other members.

Separately, The Washington Post reported Friday that the FBI investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump presidential campaign was moving closer to the White House. In addition, Comey wrote a memo detailing Trump's comments to him in February saying "I hope you can let this go", referring to the Flynn probe, a source who saw the memo said on Tuesday.

Senators said Mr Rosenstein steered clear of specifics while making clear Mr Mueller has wide latitude to pursue the investigation wherever it leads, potentially including criminal charges.

Numerous interactions between Comey and Trump were detailed in the extensive memos that Comey kept and distributed amongst his staff.

Former intelligence officials worry Israel will be more reluctant to share highly classified information with the Trump administration, especially if it could endanger spies. "It's special", Trump said.

Mr Lieberman was among four candidates Mr Trump interviewed at the White House on Wednesday. He has said at the point he left government, he had seen no such evidence to collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation; but he told lawmakers that as a private citizen, he has no window into any of the ongoing congressional or federal probes.

The White House initially said last week that Trump was prompted to fire Comey after reading the Rosenstein letter. "But we have to go back to running this country really, really well".

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., however, told reporters, after Rosenstein briefed the full Senate Thursday afternoon, that the deputy attorney general said he knew Comey would be dismissed by Trump before writing the memo that the White House released when it announced the firing.

The FBI's reputation, he said, had been damaged during the presidential campaign, given "what happened with respect to the Clinton campaign".

"This trip combines so many different things and actors that the question is going to be what's the message that he wants to communicate when he's out there", said Lanhee Chen, who advised Republican Mitt Romney's presidential campaign in 2012 and Marco Rubio's in 2016.

Spicer has taken to offering only short responses to questions or dodging entirely, as he has done repeatedly under pressure from the press corps to elaborate on whether Trump has "tapes" of private conversations with Comey, as the president has insinuated. "And I think it's a very, very negative thing". That would surely include Trump's firing last week of FBI Director James Comey.

Rosenstein, the No. 2 Justice Department official, named Mueller amid mounting pressure in Congress for an independent investigation beyond existing FBI and congressional probes into the Russian Federation issue.
