"Ukip has virtually disintegrated, and that matters politically because, if you are a middle-of-the-road Conservative who voted Remain and you see your own party effectively assimilating Ukip and its values as well as its voters, I think they will have pause now and worry about the future", he said.

The Conservatives have retained overall control of Leicestershire County Council in the local elections.

The BBC broadcaster reported, citing preliminary results of the elections, that the Conservatives won 561 seats, increasing its previous results by 155, while the Labour Party lost 125 seats and gained 404 seats.

Conservatives won the West of England metro mayor contest, while Labour claimed the mayoralties in Greater Manchester, won in the first round of voting by former cabinet minister Andy Burnham, Liverpool, Doncaster and North Tyneside.

London did not vote in this set of local elections, so the results tell us little about how voters in the constituencies most heavily opposed to Brexit will behave in the general election.

Mrs May's party had 1,900 councillors, a net gain of 558, while Labour had 1,151, a net loss of 320.

The Liberal Democrats, meanwhile, were down by almost 30, while the UK Independence Party (UKIP) had lost all of the 41 seats it held at the previous elections.

Labour's prospective MP was selected for the general election ahead of local health and homelessness campaigner Rachel Holliday, who also failed to gain a county council seat for the party.

Putin blames USA intelligence leaks for massive cyberattack
The Russian president added that while Russian organizations were attacked by the malware, no serious damage was caused. Several security experts warned that the virus was likely to wreak more havoc over the next few weeks.

However, the Liberal Democrats's disappointing performance in some other parts of England will cheer Conservatives and alarm Labour. Economists are anticipating a rebound in job growth after an unexpected dip in March capped off what we now know was the worst quarter for the United States economy in three years.

UKIP lost all eight seats on the council.

Some of the local election results will be declared in the early hours of Friday, but most will come in during the day.

In Derbyshire, the Conservatives won 19 seats directly from the Labor, which would lose control of the council for the first time since the 1970s.

It is also worth recalling that in 1983 and 1987, when voters were similarly doubtful about the ability of Labour leaders, Margaret Thatcher's Tories did a lot better in the general election than in the local ones a month earlier. It lost 143 seats, every one it was defending so far.

A total of 4,851 council seats were up for grabs in 88 councils - all of those in Scotland and Wales and 34 in England - five weeks before the general election. Most dramatically, it lost ground in Scotland, where the Conservatives — long all-but-extinct there — made gains.

May earlier this week accused the European Union of trying to influence the UK's general election.

The results sparked a furious reaction from the party's former donor Arron Banks, who said Ukip was "finished as an electoral force" under its current leadership. A telephone poll by Ipsos Mori placed the party on 49 per cent, with Labour on 26 per cent, the Lib Dems on 13 per and Ukip on four per cent.
