Unusual bedfellows: BC's 3 party leaders must court each other

Kenny Thornton | 20 May, 2017, 03:29

The NDP and the Green Party both campaigned on changing B.C.'s voting system, perhaps to a form of proportional representation or to a single-transferable-ballot system if that is what a panel recommends.

Should the Liberals win that seat, the party would have a majority - but if the seat stays with the NDP, the New Democrats and Green Party could hypothetically form a coalition or governing arrangement that would make NDP Leader John Horgan the premier.

Premier Rachel Notley hasn't commented on the election results so far.

Horgan says his staff have been following up with the Greens with more plans to meet in the coming days and weeks ahead. "We exist because the other parties aren't offering something ..."

The difference between the Liberals and NDP in the popular vote on Tuesday was about 17,800 votes in favour of Clark's party.

As British Columbia heads into the possibility of a minority provincial government, the party with the fewest seats may have the biggest role to play in shaping the tone and policies of the new government. If there are sufficient absentee votes to change the outcome in either Courtenay/Comox or Maple Ridge/Mission, the Liberals could obtain the 44 seats necessary for a majority.

The Greens' historic gains on election night leave Mr. Weaver with a hard choice: Will he prop up Ms. Clark's Liberals, or topple them and give Mr. Horgan his support?

"If it's true that British Columbians voted for a change, that must mean, if you're Andrew Weaver, ousting Christy Clark from government", Johnston said Wednesday.

"I'm prepared to work with anyone who wants a better B.C.", Horgan said.

Horgan said he also looks forward to a final result by May 22, with thousands of votes still to be counted.

With the vote count not complete, the Liberals, which are not linked to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's federal Liberal Party, had won 43 seats in the 87-seat provincial legislature.

"I want to work with him, I really do, and I've tried and I've continued to try but he's got to control his temper".

With three seats, the Green party holds the balance of power in the legislature - a remarkable position for Weaver after becoming the first Green elected four years ago.

"We inspire people to vote for something... and those people are from across the political spectrum", Weaver said.

Almost 8,600 students at more than 50 local public schools, private schools and alternate education sites cast ballots and returned NDP candidates in all four ridings.

British Columbia is home to numerous pending LNG export terminals whose fates have now become uncertain, such as one $27 billion project of Malaysia's Petronas for which NDP leader John Horgan has expressed reservations.

Although Clark and Weaver have a history of working together, Weaver and Horgan's voters may have more in common.

Though the Greens fell short of the four seats needed for official party status, Weaver wasn't concerned when he spoke to the media Wednesday.

"This is truly historic", she said.

For example, the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain expansion has been strongly supported by the Liberals but widely opposed by the NDP.
