US State Department summons Turkish Ambassador

Kenny Thornton | 20 May, 2017, 07:00

WASHINGTON (A.W.)-Audio and video analysis of recorded footage of the May 16 attack on peaceful protesters in Washington has found that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan may have ordered members of his security detail to carry out the violence.

"We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms".

McCain is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee which approves funds for the Department of Defense.

"We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", McCain told MSNBC's Morning Joe broadcast Thursday.

Ferad determined that Erdogan's security detail yelled out "he says attack" and "come, come, come" as they rushed the protesters.

"The demonstrators began aggressively provoking Turkish-American citizens who had peacefully assembled to greet the president", the embassy said.

"The violence and injuries were the result of this unpermitted, provocative demonstration", the statement said.

Tuesday's fight outside the embassy injured 11 people, at least one critically.

The meeting took place with a White House still responding to what a senior US official said was Trump's disclosure of classified information about an Islamic State terror threat involving laptop computers on aircraft.

USA officials expressed outrage after what they described as a "brutal attack" Tuesday by Erdogan bodyguards on a small group of pro-Kurdish protesters who gathered on the U.S. capital's "Embassy Row" after Erdogan met with President Donald Trump at the White House.

Asked what happened, one man bleeding profusely from a cut to his forehead said, "The Turks, the Turks, the Turks attacked us".

Turkey considers the People's Protection Units, or YPG, in Syria a terror organization and an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged a three-decade-long insurgency against the Turkish state.

Newsham added that nine people were hospitalized following the skirmish, and two men were arrested.

Mayor Muriel Bowser condemned the violence.

"That's something we will not tolerate her in Washington, D.C", he said.

Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham told a news conference Wednesday, "We intend to assure that there is accountability for anyone involved in this assault".

Republican senators McCain and Ben Sasse separately criticized Erdogan's supporters on Twitter. "It is another thing for us, as Americans, to see that exported to the United States", Hamparian said.
