The Cannes Film Festival has never had a juror quite like Will Smith, who strode into the Palais to roars of applause that brought to mind the premiere of one of his action movies (think "MIB in Paris").

Jury members Jessica Chastain, right, and Will Smith greet each other upon arrival at the photo call for the Jury at the 70th worldwide film festival, Cannes, southern France, Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

Jury members from right Agnes Jaoui, Fan Bingbing, Jessica Chastain, Will Smith, Jury president Pedro Almodovar, Paolo Sorrentino, Gabriel Yared, Park Cha-Wook and Maren Ade pose for photographers during the photo call for the Jury at the 70th global film festival, Cannes, southern France, Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

The 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival runs May 17 - 28.

Iranian animated piece "Release from Heaven" by Ali Noori Oskouei will also have its market premier May 22 as opening film of Animation Day in Cannes film festival.

Jury president Pedro Almodovar, the Spanish director who has been in competition at Cannes four times, said he hoped to discover what he described as a cinematic miracle. "You must feel small and humble in front of the image that is here to capture you". Sarandos added that finding great storytellers from around the world and giving them the ability to distribute their films globally is what Netflix does to expand the movie industry.

Smith rose to the defence of Netflix, saying he uses the service at home and his family also enjoy regular visits to movie theatres. "All this doesn't mean that I am not open or celebrate new technologies and opportunities, but as long as I'm alive I'll be fighting for the capacity of hypnosis of the large screen for the viewer".

But Smith has a $90 million movie called "Bright" coming to Netflix only, in December. Notably, as Variety reported in 2015, four US movie theater chains refused to screen Cary Fukunaga's Beasts of No Nation because the film was to be released in theaters and on Netflix simultaneously, rather than abiding by the traditional 90-day delay for home debut. Beginning next year, the festival will only admit films in competition that have French theatrical releases, which the Netflix films so far do not.

Netflix allows Smith's children to "watch films they otherwise wouldn't have seen".

Netflix, which streams films and television shows to subscribers, has two of the hottest movies in contention for the Palme d'Or - its first time in competition at the festival that France boasts is the greatest in the world. And now they get to find those artists.

Stars are arriving under tighter security than in previous years, 10 months after the truck attack in nearby Nice that killed 86 people.

Arnaud Desplechin's Ismael's Ghosts, starring Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg, has been selected to screen at this year's opening gala.
