Amazon is to add more than 40 TV channels to its United Kingdom streaming service, including ITV and live sport for the first time, upping the stakes against rival Netflix and pay-TV operators such as Sky, reports The Guardian.
The news was first exclusively reported by Broadband TV News this weekend.
"The main challenge Amazon has is that it is offering all of the channels standalone, which is potentially extremely expensive", said Broughton.
Discovery has also announced its first major United Kingdom streaming deal, offering the linear Discovery Channel and on-demand programming, such as Gold Rush and Deadliest Catch, for £4.99 ($6.48) per month. A full list of the United Kingdom offer can be found here. Eurosport will start live streaming premium sports content, beginning with the French Open, the Grand Slam tennis tournament. Everything is available through the Amazon Prime Video app. Subscribers will still have to pay £79 a year for Prime membership.
Susanna Dinnage, Discovery's United Kingdom boss, said the tie-up with Amazon "underlines our strategic ambition to reach people across every screen". This partnership underlines our strategic ambition to reach people across every screen. "Amazon Prime members can now experience the shows that are loved by Discovery fans as well as enjoy an exciting summer of sport which is about to kick off on the Eurosport Player".
This has the potential to be a cool new feature, but it's success will rely on Amazon managing to negotiate the inclusion of big-hitter channels to make it worthwhile for users to make the switch to Prime.
The move was described as highly disruptive by Paolo Pescatore, director, multi-play and media at CCS Insight.
It's also worth noting here that some of the available services on Amazon Channels haven't been available before as individual subscriptions, including Discovery which so far has only been available through a packaged cable subscription service such as Sky. This is the first time its channels have been made available outside of the Sky universe and out of a bundle.

"We focus on how we can improve our service for customers". Competitor Netflix already managed to get prime position on most smart TVs as well as on Liberty Global's set-top boxes.
Green said that so far the launch of Amazon channels in the United States, which has grown to 107 partners since late 2015, had "exceeded expectations" in terms of subscriber numbers.
