Monchi, Roma's newly-appointed sporting director, revealed earlier this month that Totti would retire at the end of this season, but the player has waited until after the penultimate weekend to confirm his decision.

"Francesco is Roma and I'm going to ask him to be close to me".

Totti ends a 25-year career with the Serie A club on Sunday when he will pull on the shirt for the last time against Genoa.

At the start of May, Roma's new sporting director Monchi had announced that Totti would not play for Roma beyond this season, with the 2006 World Cup victor expected to graduate to a directorial role with his hometown club once his playing days with the Giallorossi was over.

"It is impossible to express everything that Roma means to me, how much these colours are important and will be important, always".

"I only feel that my love for football has not passed: it's a passion, my passion". It goes so deep that I can't imagine not feeding my passion.

The brilliant midfielder made an emotional post on his Facebook account to announce he was looking for a new challenge next season.

Although limited to a series of substitute appearances under Roma coach Luciano Spalletti this season, Totti was recently linked with a move to second division American club Miami FC, which is coached by Totti's friend and former Italy teammate Alessandro Nesta.

Totti won the Scudetto under Fabio Capello's leadership in 2001 and during his 24-year spell with Roma the capital club have twice landed the Coppa Italia.

Zdenek Zeman, one of 16 coaches Totti has played under at the club, added, "I haven't heard that he wants to leave.Do I think he'll leave?"
