Today, a few hours ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) massive gherao of the city police headquarters here, jackets with "Press" written on it are being distributed to scribes. Police staged baton charges, fired tear gas and deployed water cannon in an attempt to disperse crowds.

A large number of BJP workers and policemen were injured and a police vehicle was torched as BJP workers, protesting against the law and order situation in the state and alleged fake cases lodged against party workers, clashed with security personnel here on Thursday.

There were allegations that the activists had thrown bombs which injured policemen, but BJP National Secretary Rahul Sinha denied it. Ganguly said that they wanted to go to the police headquarters to submit a deputation demanding arrest of "corrupt" TMC leaders and over alleged "lawlessnesses" in the state. They were protesting against the anti-farmer policies of the state government.

The BJP is demanding the arrest of Imam Noor-ur-Rehman Barkati - who shot to fame by issuing fatwas against many, including one against the Prime Minister - as one of its many points for gheraoing the Kolkata Police headquarters, also called Lalbazaar.
