Air strike in east Syria kills 35 civilians - Observatory

Prior to that, the USA military had said coalition airstrikes in Iraq and Syria had "unintentionally" killed a total of 352 civilians since 2014.

Scores of civilians, many of them families of IS members, have been killed in bombing raids in recent days on the eastern Syrian town of Mayadeen, held by IS since 2014.

The UN human rights chief went on to describe some of the atrocities committed by IS in the region, noting that "scant attention is being paid by the outside world to the appalling predicament of the civilians trapped in these areas".

He added that most of those killed were Moroccan and Syrian nationals, who had fled to al-Mayadeen from al-Raqqa, the de facto capital of Islamic State in north-eastern Syria.

"The same civilians who are suffering indiscriminate shelling and summary executions by ISIL, are also falling victim to the escalating airstrikes, particularly in the northeastern governorates" of Raqqa and Deir Az Zor", Al Hussein said in a statement from Geneva.

Airstrikes on two residential areas of the ISIL-controlled city of Albo Kamal in eastern Deir-ez-Zor Governorate on 15 May reportedly killed at least 59 civilians, including 16 children and 12 women and injured another 70.

Most air raids against Islamic State strongholds along the Euphrates basin in Syria have been conducted by a US -led coalition and by Syrian and Russian jets, but Iraqi warplanes have also carried out at least one air raid in east Syria.

The US-led coalition against Daesh says it is careful to avoid civilian casualties in air strikes and investigates any that are reported to have taken place. The coalition described Gunes as a Syria-based ISIS external operations facilitator from Turkey who recruited for the group in central Turkey and helped get financial support for attacks against the West. A news release from U.S. Central Command on Friday listed five strikes in Deir al-Zor, which the military said destroyed "a command and control node, and an ISIS headquarters".

Finally, Abu Khattab al-Rawi, a senior Daesh military leader, was killed near Al-Qaim, near the Syrian border in Iraq on 18 May, the statement said.

Coalition spokesman Col. Ryan Dillon did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but he told the Reuters news agency Friday that coalition forces had conducted strikes near Mayadin on Thursday and Friday, and were assessing the results. It was not immediately clear whether the incident was related to a combat situation.
