Iran's Rouhani denounces US' Middle East ignorance

Kenny Thornton | 26 May, 2017, 18:48

Iran's newly re-elected President Hassan Rouhani ridiculed US strategy in the Middle East after fierce criticism from US President Donald Trump. It is a view U.S. leader Donald Trump does not seem to share in his country's dealings with the Shiite Muslim nation, confrontation appearing to be his preferred approach.

"Our missiles are for defense and peace", Rouhani said, adding that the US expectations from Iran to halt its defensive missile program is "an illusion".

Visiting Iran's arch-foe Saudi Arabia on Sunday, Trump singled out Iran as a key source of funding and support for militant groups in the Middle East, sending a tough message to Tehran the day after Rouhani won a second presidential term.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved bipartisan legislation that would authorize the president to levy new penalties on Iran while keeping the landmark nuclear deal in place. "It is not possible to fight terrorism with precisely these kinds of shows".

During his current Mideast trip, Trump has been urging Arab leaders to join Israel in opposing Iran, citing its destabilizing activities in Syria, Iraq and Yemen. "Those who fund terrorists can not claim they are fighting against them", he said.

The reformist daily newspaper Shargh said reformists were also leading in other major Iranian cities like Isfahan, Kerman, Mashhad, Semnan, Shiraz, Tabriz and Zahedan.

Already fragile diplomatic and trade ties between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia-dominated Iran were severed previous year, after Saudi Arabia executed a Shia cleric and as a result protesters ransacked the Saudi embassy in Iran.

Appeals court rules against Trump travel ban
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the court's ruling blocks Trump's "efforts to strengthen this country's national security". Niemeyer said that the majority had made a grave error in considering the comments to interpret the executive order.

"Saudi Arabia may think that it should buy weapons but we do not need to purchase arms".

Rouhani, a 68-year-old moderate cleric who spearheaded a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, said Iranians had chosen the "path of engagement" and rejected extremism after he took 57 percent of the vote against 38 percent for hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi.

"Maybe it will help if Saudi leaders let their people to decide over their country's fate by casting their vote". Military power is only a part of strength and we are fully aware of that. "It will make them [rulers] stronger". The Russian leader expressed his confidence that the sides will continue active joint work to develop Russian-Iranian cooperation.

Municipal councils have been in Iran's constitution since after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iran's most powerful authority - Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - has ruled out normalisation of ties with the United States.

On Wednesday, just two days before Iran's presidential election, Trump announced new sanctions on Iran's ballistic missile program and released the State Department's semiannual report on sanctions related to human rights abuses in Iran.

Rouhani added: "Our missiles are for peace, not for attack". But addressing the leaders of 55 Muslim-majority countries, Trump said the meeting marked a "new chapter" that would bring lasting benefits for citizens of the USA and those of the countries being represented at the meeting. While Trump has won some praise for his mollifying statements, this new persona has not convinced everyone in the Muslim world.Without formal relations, there aren't direct flights between the two nations.
