President Trump arrived in this eternal and divided city Monday in search of what he has called "the ultimate deal" - an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement that would finally end decades of failed and frustrating diplomacy.

He made history today, becoming the first sitting USA president to visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City.

Trump promised during his campaign to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but has since backed off that pledge - at least for now.

"There are many things that can happen now that could never have happened before", Trump said during a visit to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home.

US President Donald Trump said in Israel on Monday he came away from a weekend visit to Saudi Arabia with new reasons for hope that peace and stability could be achieved in the Middle East.

"Folks, folks, just so you understand, just so you understand, I never mentioned the word or the name Israel during that conversation", Trump said. "He did not weigh in Israeli settlements, the status of Jerusalem or even whether the US would continue to insist on a two-state solution giving the Palestinians sovereign territory". But here in Israel, we're proud to have a growing and thriving Christian community, and we guarantee the rights of all.

However, news accounts have not accused Mr Trump of naming Israel as a source of the information.

President Obama had visited the holy site in Jerusalem's Old City when he was a presidential candidate, but not during his official White House visit to Israel.

"You can do a lot of projects, color and read and write letters", Trump said.

The former leader was also accused of letting Choi, who assumed no public post, intervene in state affairs behind the scenes. They were charged with taking bribes worth about $52 million from large conglomerates including Samsung , Lotte and SK.

Mr Netanyahu added that US-Israeli intelligence co-operation is "terrific".

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum said Trump's remarks were "aimed at besmirching the reputation of the Palestinian resistance".

Israel later made Jerusalem its capital, but other parts of the world refuse to recognize Israel's claim.

By denying he said the word "Israel", Trump appears to have confirmed that the classified intelligence he shared with Russian officials earlier this month originated from the country he's now visiting as part of his global trip.

It has not been reported - as Mr. Trump suggested - that he had mentioned Israel to Russian Federation in relation to his claims, though.

Today, Mr Trump will travel to Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank to meet Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

Politics surfaced minutes after Trump landed for his two-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.
