Jared Kushner and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak past year discussed creating a possible secret communications system between Donald Trump's transition team and Moscow that could not be monitored, according to news reports quoting US officials briefed on intelligence data.

The Post story is yet another sensational detail in the deluge of allegations raising questions about team Trump's relationship with the Russians, whom U.S. intelligence agencies say tried to sway the November election in Trump's favor and thus deny Hillary Clinton the presidency.

Also in attendance at that meeting was Mr. Trump's pick to be national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who was later fired for misleading the vice president about the nature of his conversations with Kislyak. Since then, there have been multiple congressional committee investigations launched as well as an FBI investigation into Russian election meddling and possible ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia.

The Post story cited anonymous "people familiar with the investigation", who said the FBI investigation did not mean Kushner was suspected of a crime.

News, citing unnamed United States officials, also reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking at Mr Kushner but emphasised that although investigators believe he has "significant information relevant to their inquiry", it does not mean they suspect him of a crime.

Todd Hinnen, the former acting head of the Justice Department's national security division, said it would be easy to read too much into investigators' interest in Kushner.

The White House declined to comment. "He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry", the statement sayz.

Kushner has emerged as one of the most important figures in the White House, deep within Donald Trump's inner circle and taking the lead on many initiatives.

One of Kushner's attorneys, Jamie Gorelick, said in a statement her client would cooperate with the investigation. A security clearance is required for anyone who is privvy to the nation's deepest secrets.

A former United States ambassador to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation who has served in both Bush administrations and under President Clinton issued a strong rebuke Friday night of President Trump's relationship with Russian Federation. CBS News reported that Trump is expected to consider plans for a shakeup of his communications operation upon his return.

But on Friday, his top economic advisor Gary Cohn said Washington would not ease sanctions on Russian Federation over the conflict in Ukraine any time soon - and may even get tougher. "Moreover, they said, nothing found so far indicates that Trump authorized, or was even aware of, the contacts" and that "there may not have been anything improper about the contacts".

There may not have been anything improper about the contacts, the current law enforcement official stressed.

Kushner offered in March to be interviewed by the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is also investigating Russia's attempts to interfere in last year's election.
