Russian director, Andrey Zvyagintsev, scoops Cannes festival jury prize for 'Loveless'

The Cannes Film Festival jury has awarded its coveted Palme d'Or award to Ruben Ostlund's "The Square".

The movie is set in Stockholm, and it focuses on the chief curator of a contemporary museum, the well heeled Christian, who seeks revenge after his wallet is stolen.

Two critics told the Scottish director at a post-screening news conference that her film about a traumatised hitman who saves a young girl from a prostitution ring was a "masterpiece".

Opening the ceremony, jury president Uma Thurman said, "We feel enormous gratitude to have had the honor of serving on the Jury for this historic 70th anniversary of the Festival de Cannes".

American Taylor Sheridan, who was nominated for an Oscar a year ago for his screenplay for the modern Western Hell or High Water, won best director for Wind River, a crime thriller about an FBI agent investigating a murder on a native American reservation.

"The Killing of a Sacred Deer", a freaky, nightmarish film starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, is considered to be in with a chance, as is "You Were Never Really Here", by one of only three women directors in Cannes, Lynne Ramsay, and starring Joaquin Phoenix as a hired killer whose weapon of choice is a hammer.

Dominic West, Elisabeth Moss and Claes Bang star in "The Square".

Rasoulof's win comes three months after Asghar Farhadi won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for "The Salesman", also shot in Iran, and recognizes him as a major force in global cinema.

"Some professed themselves marginally let down, but I have been hugely enthusiastic about quite a few films", he added.

(Hoffman's co-stars Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller have also gotten good notices, but I think critics were simply relieved to see them make a decent movie for once.) Diane Kruger could try to get in the game for Fatih Akin's In the Fade, where she plays a woman bent on revenge after a terrorist attack, but the movie wasn't acclaimed in the same way Elle was previous year and a foreign-language performance really needs strong critical support if it hopes to break through a crowded Oscar field.

The actor wore sneakers on stage as he collected the prize. The former "Twilight" heartthrob has viewers raving over his leading role in the crime thriller "Good Time", with Sandler earning awards buzz for the family comedy "The Meyerowitz Stories".

Nicole Kidman, who starred alongside Colin Farrell in that and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" missed out on the best actress trophy but was awarded a special prize by the Cannes jury, headed by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar. Only one woman has ever won the Palme d'Or in the festival's past 69 years.

Organizers have declared that next year, streaming-only films will not be accepted for the competition.
