Windows 7 hardest hit by WannaCry worm

Frank Williams | 28 May, 2017, 17:01

According to the BBC, more than 97% of the infections Kaspersky Lab has seen were on machines running on Windows 7, while security ratings firm BitSight said 66% of the infections it saw were machines running on it.

Upwards of 230,000 computers worldwide were infected by the cryptoworm on May 12th during an attack that spread to more than 150 countries.

The research was carried out in the aftermath of the Wanna Cry cyber attack, which infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries and forced the closure of vehicle manufacturing plants and hospitals.

Of the Windows 7 systems that were attacked - but defended by Kaspersky's software - most were 64-bit editions. "This is an issue that should have been, the moment the NSA found it, they should have notified Microsoft so they could quietly issue a patch and really chivvy people along long before it became a huge problem".

In a statement the States said: 'The government would like to reassure Islanders that all States of Jersey departments remain unaffected by the "WannaCry/Wannacrypt" ransomware threat'.

Security experts also found that the worm spread largely by seeking out vulnerable machines on the net by itself.

Abedi's father was allegedly a member of the al-Qaida-backed Libyan Islamic Fighting group in the 1990s - a claim he denies. Salman Abedi was a 22-year-old born in Manchester to Libyan parents, and a former University of Salford student.

Some people have paid the ransom - Many people, around the world, have simply chose to succumb to the attacker's demands and have readily paid an amount of 300$ in exchange for their precious data.

Microsoft had released a patch for Windows 7 in March but it appears that many users hadn't updated to the latest version.

Suiche, based in the United Arab Emirates and one of the world's top security researchers, provided advice and testing to ensure the fix worked across all various versions of Windows.

So it seems if Microsoft users want the ultimate protection from viruses they are best installing Windows 10. "The Windows XP count is insignificant".

Rather than take aim at Windows XP, WannaCry targeted Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, Kaspersky's data showed.

At first it was first thought that PC owners using Windows XP were most likely to be hit by the terrifying bug but new data has come to light which could disprove this. Countless news stories blamed Windows XP, which Microsoft retired three years ago, for falling victim to the attack because the vulnerability that WannaCry exploited had not been patched in the obsolete OS.
