Next for Montana's new congressman: Day in court, then DC

Francis Olson | 29 May, 2017, 09:26

Greg Gianforte celebrates his win over Rob Quist for the open congressional seat at the Hilton Garden Inn, Thursday night, May 25, 2017, in Bozeman, Mont.

There are a lot of reasons Gianforte won, of course.

Gianforte hit upon these themes in the race to replace Montana's previous congressman, Ryan Zinke, who became Trump's Interior secretary in March.

Most Democrats are relieved and encouraged that their candidate, the folk musician Rob Quist, lost by 6 points, even after national Republican groups poured twice as much money into the race as their Democratic counterparts.

It's impossible to view Montana Republican Greg Gianforte's assault on journalist Ben Jacobs in isolation.

A race that was expected to be a test of President Donald Trump's political influence, ahead of next year's U.S. congressional elections, was jolted by the charge against Mr Gianforte, a wealthy technology executive who had urged voters to send him to Congress to help Mr Trump. Just a year ago, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's prospects waxed and waned in the final days of the campaign as the FBI reopened, then closed, its investigation of her handling of sensitive emails.

He finished the game with 23, but the Celtics never came close to mounting a rally. "We're definitely disappointed. And a Warriors team playing without pressure is as unsafe as any in National Basketball Association history.

And while national Democrats offered only reluctant support to their candidates in Montana and Kansas, they have showered Ossoff with unprecedented cash and bountiful resources as he tries to flip the district. It is the case that Montana's sole congressional seat, to which Gianforte was elected, has been held by four different Republicans since 1997. Gianforte told Jacobs to talk to a campaign spokesman - and then, as the recording continues, sounds of a scuffle break out. Levinson said that the body slam came out of nowhere.

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin, who admitted that he donated to Gianforte's congressional campaign, announced Wednesday that Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault, according to The Associated Press.

Gianforte originally published an explanation of the event that partially blamed the reporter for the exchange before publicly apologizing hours before Montana polls closed Thursday afternoon. Something big happened in Montana and it was irrelevant to the votes registered by over half of the voters who cast ballots in the election.

"If you have somebody sticking a phone in your face, a mic in your face, over and over, and you don't know how to deal with the situation, you haven't really done that, you haven't dealt with that, I can see where it can. make you a little angry", Scott said Thursday.

Republicans were also reluctant to put too much meaning into the Montana outcome, given the particular circumstances of that race. The Billings Gazette reported that he also apologized to Montanans, saying "When you make a mistake you have to own up to it".

First, did Donald Trump cause candidate Greg Gianforte to body-slam Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs during an interview?

Speaking to supporters in Bozeman after his win, Mr Gianforte apologised for the incident and said he was not proud of his actions. In this election, Cascade and Lake counties switched their vote in favor of Gianforte.
