House Intelligence Committee issues subpoenas for Flynn, Cohen

Francis Olson | 01 June, 2017, 16:30

The committee subpoenaed the NSA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the CIA for information on requests for unmasking made by former national security adviser Susan Rice, former CIA Director John Brennan and former Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power.

James Comey, the former FBI director who was sacked by President Trump last month, is expected to tell a Senate committee that the president asked him to back off the investigation into Mike Flynn, a source told The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

Flynn, who previously asserted a Fifth Amendment right not to turn over documents or testify, is preparing to offer some documents in separate negotiations with the Senate Intelligence Committee, a person familiar with the matter said Tuesday. The Senate has already issued subpoenas to Flynn personally, and to his businesses.

"We will continue to pursue this investigation wherever the facts may lead", the statement read.

"If the reports are accurate, subpoenas related to the "unmasking" issue would have been sent by Chairman Nunes acting separately from the committee's Russian Federation investigation", the senior aide wrote in an email.

Tuesday was the deadline for Flynn to respond to the Senate committee.

The committee is one of several probes into alleged meddling by Moscow in last year's presidential election, and any collusion with the Trump campaign.

Gianforte Holds On To Lead To Win Seat In Montana
And I just ask you to bear with me. "Democrats who have won statewide in Montana tend to be moderate, and Quist is no moderate". In his victory speech Gianforte apologised to the reporter, telling a cheering crowd of supporters he had "learned a lesson".

However, those three Obama administration officials did not personally receive subpoenas, the sources told the Journal.

Normally names would be redacted unless there was good reason to reveal them. Trump fired Flynn in February amid questions about whether he inappropriately talked about USA sanctions against Russia with a Russian official and then misled then-Vice President-elect Pence about those talks.

Four of the subpoenas are related to the Russian Federation investigation. It marked the first time the White House officially acknowledged that outside counsel had been retained. The committee aide, who wasn't authorized to discuss the issue and spoke only on condition of anonymity, said the action would have been taken without agreement from the Democratic minority on the committee.

A spokesman for Warner declined to comment for this article Tuesday, while a spokeswoman for committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., did not immediately return a request for comment.

Trump fired Flynn in February for making misleading statements about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to Washington. Both of their firms-Flynn Intel Llc and Michael D. Cohen and Associates PC-were also subpoenaed.

Devin Nunes, R-California the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

In January, when a dossier was published containing unconfirmed allegations about Trump, his associates, and the Russians, Cohen called the claims "laughably false".
