The name jumped up 36 places in the list of popular baby names registered, to become the 83rd most common in Ireland past year.

The most popular name is now James, according to the list for 2016 published by the Central Statistics Office.

James takes over from Jack, which was the most popular name in 2015 while Emily succeeds Grace. Jack has held on to second place in the overall figures.

The next three most popular boys' names past year were Daniel, Conor and Sean.

Jack was the most popular name for newborn little boys in the county past year, while Emily and Grace were tied as the most popular girl's name in Kildare. Back in 1966, John, Michael, Patrick, James and Paul were the names most favoured by parents of newborn baby boys. Ava replaced Emily as the top name for baby girls in Donegal in 2016, while Emily remains the top name registered for girls across the 26 Republic of Ireland counties past year. Muhammad jumped 36 places, from 119 in 2015 to 83 in 2016. Noah was the 6th most popular name among boys. In Waterford County, Saoirse was the most popular.

Some less popular names for boys included Anton, Brodie, Cruz, Harris and Feilim while less popular girls' names included Blake, Indigo, Lucia, Reidin, Romy and Peyton.

Murphy, Kelly, O'Brien, Ryan and Walsh were the five most popular surnames of newborns registered in 2016.
