Repercussions of US Embassy's potential move to Jerusalem

Repercussions of US Embassy's potential move to Jerusalem Repercussions of US Embassy's potential move to Jerusalem

A law passed in 1995 mandated that the embassy be moved to Jerusalem, but every president since has signed a waiver preventing this.

US President Donald Trump is likely to abandon his campaign promises to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as he may have plans to make this move a part of the comprehensive peace agreement between Israel, the Arab states and the Palestinians, an opposition member of the Israeli parliament, Ksenia Svetlova, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"For now, there is no a direct criticism towards Donald Trump unlike towards his predecessor- Barack Obama, who was harshly criticized for signing this waiver". His administration intends to make clear, however, that Trump remains committed to the promise he made during the 2016 presidential campaign, though it will not set a specific timetable for doing so, officials said.

President Donald Trump is predicted to leave the US embassy in Tel Aviv, instead of moving it to Jerusalem as he vowed during his campaign, CNN reports. "It will be when, not if", one official told CNN.

But he did not renew this call - which would anger many Palestinians and neighbouring Arab states - when he visited Jerusalem last week on his first foreign trip. Despite that, most experts are skeptical of Trump's chances for achieving a peace deal that eluded other United States presidents.

Bombing in diplomatic area of Kabul kills 90, wounds scores
Afghan officials say a heavy explosion has caused casualties and damage in the diplomatic area of the capital Kabul . Separately, the US Embassy said it did "not appear to have been the target of the blast", a spokesperson said.

But the law contained a clause that has allowed each president since to issue and renew a six-month waiver on carrying out the move.

Asked Tuesday if Trump had made a decision to sign a waiver to delay the move, press secretary Sean Spicer said simply, "No".

Israel has occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem since the 1967 Middle East war. Shifting the US Embassy would be widely seen as Washington's recognition of the Israeli position on Jerusalem's status, which successive US administrations have said must be decided in negotiations between the two sides.

A report by the Israeli daily Haaretz on Wednesday, citing anonymous Israeli and American sources familiar with the Trump administration's internal debates on the matter, say that leading top political adviser Steve Bannon is among those spearheading a push for the embassy move.
