US Attacks on East Syria Town Kill Over 100 Civilians

Kenny Thornton | 01 June, 2017, 16:12

Apart from the latest incidents involving possible civilian casualties, the Pentagon said coalition airstrikes in Syria and neighboring Iraq have unintentionally killed 352 civilians since September 2014.

The ministry said that Syria condemns the US -led attacks which target civilians and cause massive material damage to the infrastructure, facilities, and properties in Syria, calling on the UN Security Council to implement its resolutions on preserving the integrity of Syria's territory and people and stop the attacks of the illegal coalition.

The U.S. has increasingly been criticized not only for killing large numbers of innocents but also for denying responsibility for some of its air strikes and for dramatically undercounting civilian casualties.

Al-Hussein said he was concerned about retaliatory measures taken by IS against civilians suspected of facilitating the airstrikes and reports that civilians were being prevented from leaving IS-controlled areas.

The raids on Deir al-Zour, which is mainly controlled by the hardline Sunni militia, came as the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Syrian Kurds and Arabs, continue to press ahead with a multi-pronged attack on al-Raqqa. More than 20, including 10 IS fighters, were killed in other airstrikes that hit the municipality building among other places.

Several recent reports underline the growing risk to civilians in the US -led war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

The attack was the first such close confrontation between America troops and fighters backing Assad. But, al-Mousawi added such a move would require the approval of the Iraqi government.

Oftentimes, US officials have been so outraged at Syria's "indiscriminate" air strikes that they've demanded regime change, and has railed at Russian Federation and Iran for tolerating their tactics in bombing civilian targets.

Scores of civilians, many of them families of IS members, have been killed in bombing raids in recent days on the eastern Syrian town of Mayadeen, held by IS since 2014. The Observatory this week reported that between April 23 and May 23 of this year, coalition strikes had killed a total of 225 civilians in Syria.

Islamic State is losing ground in both Syria and Iraq under assault from an array of sometimes rival forces in both countries.

The commanders included Mustafa Gunes, a Turkish national, and Abu Asim al-Jazaeri, a French-Algerian fighter.

His spokesman Rupert Colville told a Geneva briefing: "There are multiple air forces operating in this part of Syria including the (US-led) coalition, mainly the coalition".
