President Donald Trump is expected to make a decision soon about whether the US will stay in the Paris climate deal, a global agreement which commits nearly every nation in the world to combat global heating.

A White House official said earlier in the day that Trump was planning to pull out of the Paris deal, although a final decision hadn't been made.

Trump has said he will announce his decision on the landmark climate accord later Thursday.

The accord, agreed on by almost 200 countries in Paris in 2015, aims to limit planetary warming in part by slashing carbon dioxide and other emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.

Ahmed Sareer, the Maldives U.N. ambassador and chairman of the island group, told a press conference at U.N. headquarters that if President Donald Trump pulls out of the climate deal, alliance countries "will raise our voices as much as we can" in a fight for survival against rising sea levels.

Trump had vowed during his 2016 presidential campaign to "cancel" the Paris deal within 100 days of becoming president as part of an effort to bolster US oil and coal industries.

Trump has often said the U.S. did not get a "fair deal" in the Paris accord, which was agreed upon by more than 190 countries at the initiative of his predecessor Barack Obama.

Trump promised during his 2016 campaign that he'd withdraw the USA from the deal.

Seventy percent say climate change is happening, according to a study from researchers on climate communications at Yale and George Mason universities in January, and 55% said it is mostly caused by humans.

The Trump administration may choose to exit the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In pulling out Mr Trump, who has described climate change as a hoax by the Chinese to hurt United States manufacturing, would be honouring a pledge made on the campaign trail to quit Paris and boost fossil fuel production at home.

Trump to announce decision on climate agreement today
Economists say that leaving the Paris deal and easing efforts to control emissions would hardly deliver a big payoff in jobs. While traveling overseas last week, Trump was repeatedly pressed to stay in the deal by European leaders and the Vatican.

The U.S.is the world's second largest emitter of carbon, following only China.

But they also say that even with the US doing its share, preventing that warming is going to be unlikely and will require even more cuts than contained in the Paris agreement.

Other government agencies are assuring that they will remain in the accord even if Trump makes the decision to leave.

The Associated Press interviewed dozens of scientists and consulted computer simulations, and they say without the USA pledges, the unsafe 2-degree rise is almost inescapable.

At the G-7 summit in Italy last week, European leaders expressed frustration at the emerging US position.

Almost 200 world leaders, including the USA, agreed in 2015 to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

"A full, formal withdrawal could take up to three years to execute, unravelling one of former President Barack Obama's major achievements in office to reduce the impacts of climate change", it added.

"President Trump is ceding the future to the Germans, the Chinese, the Indians, and other nations rather than having the United States continue to lead the world on clean energy solutions", said Sen.

President Trump is expected to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. "There are no indications whether the United States will stay in the Paris Agreement or not".

It would also deal a heavy blow to the hard-won worldwide consensus on tackling global warming and incur "substantial" additional costs for other key emitters, such as China and the European Union, to fulfill their emissions reduction obligations under the Paris deal, he said.
