The brawl that erupted last week between protesters in Washington and the bodyguards of Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan ended up in the background of last week's avalanche of news, but as Donald Trump escaped the country for a week, the fallout from the fight continued.

VOA's Turkish service recorded images at the scene that indicated the Turkish security detail suddenly turned on the demonstrators, knocking them to the ground and kicking them until American police pushed the Turks away. DC police officers were involved in the brawl, and one of them was among the nine people injured. The embassy's statement goes on to say, "The demonstrators began aggressively provoking Turkish-American citizens who had peacefully assembled to greet the President". They in turn had responded in self-defence.

The State Department also said two members of the Turkish security detail were briefly detained during the altercations.

Turkey has called on U.S. authorities to conduct a "full investigation of this diplomatic incident".

Turkey lodged a formal protest with the US ambassador to Ankara over what it alleges were "lapses in security" that supposedly led to the violence between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's bodyguards and protesters in Washington, D.C., last week, the Washington Post reported Monday. Turkey considers the fighters to be an extension the Kurdish insurgency in Turkey known as the PKK, and claims without evidence that protesters who showed up during Erdogan's visit to Washington last week were themselves associated with the PKK.

The State Department in a statement confirmed that Turkey called on the US ambassador to discuss the incident.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has a recurring problem with foreign dissent occurring on foreign soil, and can't seem to get through a visit to the United States without his bodyguards feeling obliged to assault political demonstrations.

In a statement, the ministry said Turkey was protesting against the "aggressive and unprofessional actions taken" by USA security personnel. U.S. Senator John McCain, one of the leading foreign policy voices in Congress, on Thursday called for the expulsion of Turkey's U.S. ambassador. For his part, the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has asked Washington to recall its special envoy for the Syrian conflict, Brett McGurk, whom he accuses of supporting Kurdish "terrorists".

The State Department prior to Sunday called the clash "deeply disturbing" and insisted there would be a "thorough investigation" to hold those responsible accountable.
