Saudi Arabia's foreign minister rejected an accusation by Iran's Revolutionary Guards that Saudi Arabia was behind twin attacks in Tehran on Wednesday that killed at least 12 people.

Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi made the remark in a televised interview with IRIB last night, adding "six assailants on Imam Khomeini Shrine and parliament were killed and one female terrorist was arrested at the shrine and is now being interrogated by intelligence forces".

It is now unclear how the attacker or attackers entered the parliament building, which is highly fortified, with multiple security checkpoints.

"Deputy Interior Minister Hossein Zolfaqari said that the terrorists had entered the parliament in [women's] dress", Iran's state news agency reports.

Alison translated the extremist group's message to: "Fighters from the Islamic State have attacked the Khomeini shrine and the parliament building in central Tehran".

Iran's revolutionary guard, however, accused Saudi Arabia of being behind the attack. Five people believed to be planning a third attack were arrested, officials said.

At least 13 people were killed by the attackers, Iranian officials have said, while at least 43 others have been injured.

The violence comes amid heightened tension in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia and other Arab states cutting ties with Qatar over alleged support for Islamist militants and closer ties with Iran.

Trump's comments also brought criticism from Iranians on social media, who recalled their government's offers of support and the candlelight vigils held in Iran after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

"We grieve and pray for the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks in Iran, and for the Iranian people, who are going through such challenging times", the statement said.

Despite these remarks, Iranian backed forces are fighting alongside the US-led coalition against Daesh in Iraq.

The assault marks the first attacks claimed by ISIL, in Iran.

The White House also released a statement from President Donald Trump condemning the attacks in Tehran and offering condolences, but also implied that Iran is itself a sponsor of terrorism, the Associated Press reported.

"They earlier left Iran and were involved in the crimes of the terrorist group in Raqqa and Mosul", the ministry said, referring to Islamic State's effective capital in Syria and a city it captured in Iraq.
