Yesterday the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), based on Huntsville's Redstone Arsenal, successfully intercepted and destroyed an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) target during the first live-fire test of MDA's Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system.

The Pentagon successfully tested a missile interceptor launched from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base on Monday, destroying a mock warhead over the Pacific Ocean as a show of military might one day after North Korea launched the latest in a series of missile tests meant to signal its own growing strength.

The successful shootdown of an intercontinental ballistic missile target in this week's interceptor test shows the United States can "outpace" foreign missile threats through 2020, the USA missile defense agency chief said Wednesday.

According to the test plan, a 5-foot-long "kill vehicle" released from atop the interceptor zeroed in on the ICBM-like target's mock warhead outside Earth's atmosphere and obliterated it by sheer force of impact, the Pentagon said.

GMD is an integral element of the United States' layered ballistic missile defense architecture, with interceptors at Vandenberg Air Force Base and Fort Greely, Alaska. These include the Patriot missile, which numerous countries have purchased from the USA, and the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which the US deployed this year to South Korea to defend against medium-range missiles from North Korea. The US military said the test was successful.

The U.S. interceptor has an uneven track record, having succeeded nine times out of 17 attempts against missiles in test since 1999.

Chris Johnson of the Missile Defense Agency told Business Insider that while they managed to shoot down the ICBM with just a single interceptor missile, "in an operational scenario we'd likely use more than one".

It was the first live-fire test event against an ICBM-class target for GMD and the USA ballistic missile defence system. The test - designated Flight Test Ground-Based Interceptor (FTG)-15 - aimed to provide the data necessary to assess the performance of the GMD system and provide enhanced homeland defense capabilities.

The North has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of previous year. The test intercept of an ICBM was the first attempted by the US. "The United States must know our declaration that we can turn the devils' den into ashes with nuclear weapons is not an empty threat", the paper said, according to a Channel News Asia report.

Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said North Korea was a factor in, but not the primary reason for the test. It has been in place since 2004 and never used in combat or fully tested. The GMD consists of a land-based, fire-control system and interceptor missiles created to strike ICBMs in flight outside the atmosphere.
