Surprise Setback for Britain's Conservatives as Possibility of Hung Parliament Looms

Francis Olson | 09 June, 2017, 10:34

As the exit poll announcement loomed, punters clustered around the screens and conversations fell silent.

Under fire from inside and outside the Labour Party ever since he became the shock leader following the last election, Corbyn would feel hugely vindicated if the exit poll holds.

Sterling fell by more than two cents against the U.S. dollar as markets digested the prospect of extreme political uncertainty and even the risk of a second election this year.

May called an election three years ahead of schedule, at a time when her party was well ahead in the polls. If no party is able to command a majority on the basis of confidence and supply, the parties may have no choice but to call for another General Election.

Britain's Primer Minister Theresa May and her husband Philip leave a polling station in Sonning, Britain, June 8. But attacks that killed 30 people in Manchester and London twice brought the campaign to a halt, sent a wave of anxiety through Britain and forced May to defend the government's record on fighting terrorism.

May was widely derided for endlessly repeating her slogan of "strong and stable leadership" despite her u-turn on the care policy.

Some EU officials had voiced hope that a stronger majority for May could allow her to make more concessions in the negotiations. Some critics nicknamed her "the Maybot".

Her opinion poll lead narrowed sharply, although the consensus before the exit poll remained that she would win a majority.

Madhya Pradesh firecracker factory blast toll hits 25
According to Balaghat district Collector Bharat Yadav, the cracker factory is owned by Waris Ahmed and was being run legally. The district administration ordered a magisterial probe headed by additional district magistrate to probe the incident.

- Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called on Theresa May to quit in his acceptance speech in Islington. They rallied slightly when the first two constituencies to report results revealed vote shares that were more favourable to the Tories than the exit poll suggested, but sagged once again when Newcastle East reported that Labour's margin of victory over the Conservatives was 14 percentage points greater this year than it was in 2015.

Among Friday's election surprises were the spike in support for the opposition Labour party in London, which voted overwhelmingly to remain in the European Union, and a strong showing for the pro-European Liberal Democrats.

In 2015 the Conservatives won 331 seats - meaning they could face losing 17 seats if the poll is accurate.

One senior party source pointed out Mrs May had said repeatedly during the election campaign that if she lost six seats she would no longer be Prime Minister, adding: " If this exit poll is correct, her credibility is completely shot".

"The country needs a period of stability and whatever the results are the Conservative Party will ensure we fulfil our duty in ensuring that stability so that we can all, as one country, go forward together", she said.

May campaigned for a so-called hard Brexit in which the United Kingdom would quit the single market in return for reclaiming power over immigration, laws and money. May, though, would be unlikely to lead the country even if her party can form a coalition as it did in 2010 when it joined forces with the Liberal Democrats. Can we get into government and second has Theresa May lost this election?

"It's still very, very early in the evening", said Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire.

What unites members of all three parties is a certain degree of skepticism that the decision to leave the European Union was the right one.
