In the most eagerly anticipated United States congressional hearing in years, Comey told lawmakers the Trump administration had lied and defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the president dismissed him on May 9.
Comeysaid during his almost three hours of testimony that after he was sacked by Trump on May 9, he felt that he needed to get the content of the meeting with the president into the "public square".
During nearly three hours of statements Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Comey described himself as "stunned" by Trump's "very disturbing" and "very concerning" behavior in several of their meetings.
Asked if he would be willing to give his version of events under oath, Mr Trump replied: "100 percent".
"I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document", he said of one such occasion.
"It was just an excuse, but we were very, very happy, and frankly, James Comey confirmed a lot of what I said, and some of the things that he said just weren't true".
Sessions recused himself from "any existing or future investigations" regarding the 2016 presidential race in early March, after facing bipartisan pressure to step aside from the probe due to his involvement with the Trump campaign.
Though Republicans worked to discredit Comey and to blunt the impact of his testimony, the ex-director's statement deepened questions about the basis for his May 9 dismissal and about whether Trump's actions constituted obstruction of justice.

Trump was out of line when he suggested Comey should back off Flynn; he appears to have little respect for the established norms of the presidency.
The White House and Trump's lawyers expressed vindication over some parts of Comey's testimony and lashed out at others.
But he said that Trump's request at a February 14 Oval Office meeting for him to ease the probe of former national security advisor Michael Flynn sounded like an order.
Kasowitz also suggested Comey should be prosecuted for leaking "privileged information", and that Trump was eager to focus on his agenda "with this public cloud removed". Those conversations are reflected in memos Mr Comey wrote, and now are in the possession of Robert Mueller, the special counsel in the Russian Federation probe named after Comey's firing. Instead, Trump let his lawyer do the talking for him. About the loyalty pledge from Comey, Mr Trump said: "I hardly know the man, I'm not going to ask him to pledge allegiance".
The White House stood behind Sessions.
To this Comey said the FBI was investigating as fast as possible but believed it to be a bad idea to make public statements primarily because "it would create a duty to correct, should that change".
This has raised questions as to why Comey didn't tell others, including the attorney general. "I didn't do it myself for a variety of reasons, but I asked him to because I thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel, so I asked a close friend of mine".
Many Democrats still blame Comey for Clinton's loss, leading Trump to apparently believe they would applaud him for firing Comey. The president has acknowledged that the Russian Federation probe was his motivation.
