Attorney General Jeff Sessions Offers To Testify To Intelligence Panel

Kenny Thornton | 13 June, 2017, 04:53

Judge Andrew Napolitano said this morning that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is in a "dangerous position" legally if he testifies tomorrow before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Senators on that committee are expected to question Sessions about his meetings with Russians - a topic that has come under increased scrutiny amid investigations into Russian meddling in the USA presidential election.

Sessions recused himself in March following revelations that he met twice previous year with the Russian ambassador.

Sessions, among the earliest high-profile backers of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, will appear days after explosive testimony by ousted FBI director James Comey suggested Trump sought to interfere with the sprawling Russian Federation investigation.

Comey said Trump told Sessions and other administration officials to leave the room before Trump asked him in February to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions hearing before the Senate intelligence committee will be open to the public, committee officials confirmed Monday. White House frustrations with the Justice Department spilled into public view last week, when Trump on Twitter criticized the legal strategy in defending his proposed travel ban. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said he also has questions about Sessions' participation in Comey's firing.

It's not clear whether it will be a public hearing or conducted behind closed doors- the panel will decide that.

"Now, twice in 2 mos., AG Sessions cancels an Approps hg in which I could Q him about his false testimony and half-hearted Russian Federation recusal", he said in a later tweet. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will attend that hearing in his place, and Sessions will go before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

He called for Sessions to clarify what involvement he had in the Russian Federation probe before his recusal; what "safeguards" are now in place; and why he "felt it was appropriate" to recommend Comey's firing when he was leading that investigation.

Sessions will also be pressed on whether he thinks Trump's accusations that Comey's sworn statement to Congress was false means he should be investigated for perjury.

Republicans have moved to downplay the Russian Federation controversy in the wake of Comey's testimony, claiming the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director affirmed some of Trump's key claims. Comey declined to elaborate in an open setting.

President Donald Trump is planning to hold a campaign-style rally later this month in Iowa.

"He was insane, a real nut job", Trump said about Comey, according to the document. The former senator later issued a clarification saying he had met with the ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

Senator Patrick Leahy, the Senate appropriations committee's top Democrat and a member of the Senate judiciary committee, tartly reminded Sessions that both oversee his department.

Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said Sessions requested that the committee hearing be public.
