Doubts over Brexit talks as results leave May vulnerable

Official Languages Commissioner 20170515 Doubts over Brexit talks as results leave May vulnerable
Kenny Thornton | 13 June, 2017, 04:51

Mr Crowther said: "Though she is personally damaged as our negotiator, the suggestion that Mrs May's dismal electoral performance relieves the Government of the need to achieve full Brexit is absolutely unacceptable".

British Prime Minister Theresa May met with Queen Elizabeth hours after the results of the shocking general election showed that she failed to win a majority in the House of Commons.

The Democratic Unionist Party, which won 10 seats in Thursday's voting, has emerged as the most likely partner to form a coalition government.

The Labour leader, who survived an attempt to oust him by his own MPs before the election, now expects that he will be able to attract some of the party's biggest names to serve on his front bench.

Theresa May has said she will work with the Northern Ireland unionist party to allow her form a government after her party lost their parliamentary majority.

But other arrangements short of a coalition could involve a "supply and confidence" agreement under which smaller parties would pledge to back the Government's budget and programme without taking up ministerial positions in the new administration.

May has insisted that Brexit means Brexit but it is unclear how long she will remain in power or whether another British election will be called.

Speaking during a visit to Mexico City, Merkel said Germany was ready for the Brexit talks, which May said would begin on June 19 as scheduled - although she now risks more opposition to her European Union departure plans from inside and outside her party.

Following a meeting with the Queen to seal her continued premiership, she asserted only the Conservatives and the DUP have "the legitimacy and ability to provide that certainty by commanding a majority in the House of Commons" having secured the largest number of votes and the greatest number of seats in the General Election.

This round of firings, however, stems from a separate investigation conducted by another law firm hired by Uber, Perkins Coie . A former engineer at Uber named Susan Fowler published a blog post alleging that she was propositioned by a superior for sex.

Analysts say May's electoral debacle could reopen what had seemed largely a closed debate - both with pro-EU members of Parliament trying to take advantage of the prime minister's weakness and Euro-skeptic government ministers threatening her if she dares water down a Brexit deal.

It was not so much that the Conservatives did miserably - just 1,688 strategically-cast votes could have won them the 326-seat majority they needed.

May's office announced earlier that the top Cabinet ministers would keep their jobs, including Treasury chief Philip Hammond, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd.

May's political rivals criticized her when she chose to stay away from a televised election debate on May 31.

The stunning election result comes after a campaign in which May lost popularity over her style and some of her social care policies, including a so-called "dementia tax" that would force elderly to pay more for their care.

"I think its quite possible there'll be an election later this year or early next year, and that might be a good thing, because we can not go on with a period of great instability", he told the BBC's Andrew Marr on Sunday.

SCULLY: I think Theresa May's finished. France said the election result would not call into question Britain's decision to exit.

Some senior Tories have made the removal of Hill and Timothy a condition for continuing to support May, who has vowed to remain prime minister despite the Conservatives' losing their overall majority in Parliament. Yet with the result from Thursday's United Kingdom election, which left no single party with a majority, it is anyone's guess when and how the country will be ready to start the talks.
