May working to fill out ranks of minority government after disappointing election

Laurie Berry | 13 June, 2017, 02:33

Labour's leftwing leader Jeremy Corbyn, once written off by his opponents as a no-hoper, said May should step down and that he wanted to form a minority government.

The stunning outcome leaves May battling to unite different factions of her party and reliant on a handful of Northern Irish parliamentarians just nine days before Britain starts the tortuous process of negotiating its departure from the EU.

Britain's best-selling Sun newspaper said senior members of her party had vowed to get rid of May, but would wait at least six months because they were anxious that a leadership contest now could propel Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn into power. Meanwhile, the Labour Party surged, winning 29 seats in areas where the party's lukewarm support for the Brexit played well. But the election result meant it was unclear whether her plan to take Britain out of the bloc's single market and customs union could still be pursued.

In terms of the Brexit negotiations, it was the worst possible election result.

A major campaign issue centered on Britain's plan to leave the European Union, also called Brexit. The losses complicate the SNP's plans to push for a new referendum on Scottish independence as Britain prepares to leave the EU.

This sort of thing will be par for the course in a country like India in a situation of "hung" Parliament when the ruling party did not win outright, but seems unusual for Britain. British citizens approved the plan in a vote previous year.

"Theresa May is certainly the strongest leader that we have at the moment", David Jones, a junior Brexit minister, told the BBC.

Mr Leslie said Labour missed an "open goal" as he had "never known" a more beatable prime minister than Theresa May.

The loyalist and socially conservative party, the biggest in Northern Ireland, has drawn controversy for opposing same-sex marriage and any reform of the province's strict abortion laws. The Times newspaper's front page declared "May stares into the abyss".

"We welcome this commitment, which can provide the stability and certainty the whole country requires as we embark on Brexit and beyond", he said.

The British PM was forced to relinquish her two closest aides - joint chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill - as she struggled to reassert her authority. "The task of restoring orderly government in order to make sense of Brexit is now a national emergency, and it falls to them". Labour have taken the seat for granted for a very long time.

May said Brexit talks would begin on June 19 as scheduled, the same day as the formal reopening of parliament. She has been found out. According to the exit polls, whichever party forms the next government will need to form a coalition with smaller parties, a reality that is more common in other parliamentary democracies, such as Israel.

Following talks between Mrs May and the DUP on Saturday night, a second statement confirmed that no final deal had been reached. "She's attempting to form a government", Corbyn told the Mirror.

One DUP lawmaker suggested support for May could come vote by vote, making the job of governing fraught with risk.
