Trump doubles down on call for 'travel ban'

Francis Olson | 15 June, 2017, 19:54

On Monday, after spending the weekend using social media to reignite his fight with the mayor of London over terror attacks, he took to Twitter to severely damage the legal defense for what is perhaps his administration's most controversial policy action - his executive order banning travel to the US from six majority-Muslim countries.

Accusing Trump of bias, they said the US President did not take action against those countries due to vested interest, citing his business ties with the Gulf.

Fresh from reigniting for his Travel Ban argument and his spat with London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, following Saturday's deadly terror attack at London Bridge, US President Donald Trump returned to Twitter Monday morning spoiling for a Supreme Court fight to resurrect his ban.

Critics of President Donald Trump's stalled travel ban say he may have undercut the government's defense of the measure when he bashed the Justice Department for asking the Supreme Court to review a "watered-down" version of the ban.

Even potential allies criticized the president's statements, including George Conway, the husband of Trump's counselor Kellyanne Conway, who recently withdrew from consideration for a top Justice Department job.

The administration has argued that the order is not a travel ban, but rather a temporary moratorium to allow for the establishment of proper USA vetting procedures.

He had tweeted that the U.S. needs "the travel ban as an extra level safety" a few days before.

Early in the administration, White House press secretary Sean Spicer outright scolded reporters for labeling Trump's plan a travel ban. "And this president is trying to do something to protect the people of this country".

But the president's next tweet contradicts to what Sanders said.

I would '100 percent' be willing to testify about Comey under oath
The US president said he would go under oath to give his version of what happened between him and the FBI Director he fired . I hardly know the man. "You're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry", Trump said .

'That's right, we need a TRAVEL BAN for certain risky countries, not some politically correct term that won't help us protect our people!' he wrote.

Mr Trump has used attacks around the world to justify his pursuit of the travel and immigration ban, one of his first acts since taking office.

Trump also stressed that his proposal was a "travel ban", a description his aides have disputed in the past.

Neal Katyal, a lawyer for the state of Hawaii in a separate case about the executive order, tweeted that Trump is "acting as our co-counsel" by speaking publicly about the "travel ban".

Federal appeals courts have struck down the ban, ruling that statements from Trump and other administration officials showed that the order unconstitutionally targeted Muslims.

"These tweets may make some ppl feel better, but they certainly won't help OSG get 5 votes in SCOTUS, which is what actually matters", Conway tweeted.

"I don't think from a national security encounter terrorism perspective, it gets at the problem", she said on CNN's New Day.

Iraq was removed from the list of banned countries in the second order and an indefinite halt to entry from Syrian refugees was replaced by a temporary pause. "We don't need the help but will take it!"
