If confirmed by the state Senate, Feinman would be the first openly gay judge to serve on the state's top court, Cuomo's office said Thursday.
"Justice Feinman will be an exceptional addition to New York's highest court", Cuomo said in a statement. During an interview on the cable news station NY1, Cuomo praised Feinman's abilities.
"I thank Governor Cuomo for this opportunity to serve on the Court of Appeals and, if confirmed, look forward to working with my distinguished colleagues on the court to continue to serve NY", he said. He was elected to the State Supreme Court in New York County in 2007 and appointed to the Appellate Division in 2012.

He also worked as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan and a law clerk, before being elected as a New York City civil court judge in 1996.
Feinman, a graduate of Columbia University and University of Minnesota Law School, is a member of the Richard C. Failla LGBT Commission, and was the president of the International Association of LGBT Judges from 2008-2011. The Legislature is scheduled to end its annual legislative session on Wednesday.
