Republicans urge Trump to disclose whether he has recordings of Comey

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has confirmed that he will appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee next week to testify over his dealings with Russian officials, the media reported.

"Some members [of the appropriations committees] have publicly stated their intention to focus their questions on issues related to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, from which I have recused, and for which the Deputy Attorney General appointed a special counsel".

Richard Shelby, R-Ala., Sessions said that he had been scheduled to discuss the Justice Department budget before House and Senate Appropriations subcommittees but that it had become clear some members would focus their questions on the Russian Federation investigation.

While addressing the United States congressional hearing days ago, Comey said Trump fired him to try to undermine the agency's investigation of possible collusion by his campaign with Russia's alleged efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election.

He had told politicians at his January confirmation hearing that he had not met with Russians during the campaign.

"We on the Intelligence Committee want to know the answers to those questions, and we have begun to request information from the attorney general to allow us to get to the bottom of that".

The New York City federal prosecutor who expected to remain on the job when Trump took office but ended up being fired said he was made uncomfortable by one-on-one interactions with the president - just like Comey was.

The Justice Department has said that while Sessions was there, for a speech by Trump, there were no meetings or private encounters.

The Texas Republican said that he was confident Sessions will put an end to the "myths" surrounding recent reports, with his testimony.

Despite Sessions' admitted talks with Kislyak, he has been dogged by questions about possible additional encounters with the ambassador, including at a foreign policy conference more than a year ago at a hotel in Washington.

The next day, Comey said, he implored Sessions never to leave him alone again with the president, but Sessions did not reply. The DOJ fired back with a response saying Sessions recused himself only because he was involved in President Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. The next day, Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation and said it would be overseen by his deputy attorney general, who last month appointed a special counsel to handle the probe. He said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would appear before the subcommittees.

But behind the scenes, there was significant pushback from Democrats - including Senate Intelligence Committee vice chairman Mark Warner - who raised objections with Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr that Sessions may be trying to skirt public scrutiny.

"There's an unpredictability. He projects an instability", Feinstein said.
