58 people feared dead in London tower fire: United Kingdom police

Frank Williams | 18 June, 2017, 16:01

On Friday, Nadir had tackled Mrs Leadsom over why sprinklers had not been fitted in Grenfell Tower during a recent £8.6m refurbishment.

Tensions in the local community have grown since Wednesday's deadly blaze at the Grenfell Tower in north Kensington which provided social housing for some 600 people.

Condoling the incident earlier, Londor Mayor Sadiq Khan said, "The bad news, I'm afraid, is lots of people died in the fire. That 58 would include that 30", he told reporters here.

The fire has been a major test for Prime Minister Theresa May, whose Conservative Party is clinging to power after losing majority control of Parliament to a Labour surge in a snap election this month.

Asked repeatedly whether she had misread the public mood, May did not answer directly but said the focus was on providing support to the victims.

"It really devastated me", he said.

The British police fired a stun gun at a man who reached for a knife as he ran towards officers at one of the gates to the Westminster parliament in central London yesterday, witnesses said.

Earlier this week she was criticised for not meeting members of the public when she visited Grenfell Tower in the aftermath of the disaster.

May said she would be responsible for implementing the inquiry's findings, while the victims' legal costs would be met by the government. Unfortunately, that number is only expected to rise as officials continue to search for dozens of missing persons.

Trump 'confirms' he's under probe
The President complained the probe was unfair and wondered why his defeated Democratic opponent was not getting the same scrutiny. She's the associate attorney general, which makes her third in command at the Justice Department behind Rosenstein and Sessions.

She has also pledged £5 million (S$8.8 million) of support, housing guarantees and help with access to bank accounts and cash.

Similarly, the mother of Hesham Rahman who also lived in the Grenfell Tower said that her son remains missing.

The meeting came one day after May was chastised by protesters as she visited near the scene of the blaze. "Sadly, we do not expect any survivors". "I've got friends in that tower, I've got a right to be angry".

He's been left with the feeling he could have done more to save people, saying he'd do things differently if he could go back.

A group of angry protestors on Friday had entered the Kensington Town Hall shouting "we want justice" and "shame on you", according to Reuters. Earlier in the day, the 91-year-old monarch described the country's mood as "somber" but insisted that Britain remained resolute during a hard time.

Such a direct message from the monarch is rare and indicated the extent of the turmoil in Britain. He said he was "heartbroken by the tragic fire and the appalling loss of life".

The inferno Wednesday morning at the 24-story Grenfell Tower has led to community anger and protests over the government's response.
