18 protesters in Minnesota arrested after Philando Castile verdict

Francis Olson | 19 June, 2017, 13:34

The protests are still going on since demonstrations on Friday night after Yanez was not convicted.

"As people across our city, state and country react to the jury's verdict, I urge each of us to move forward in a way that is peaceful and respectful of everyone - residents, demonstrators and police officers alike".

"I don't doubt that Officer Yanez is a decent person, but he made a frightful mistake from our perspective, and that's what this case was about", Choi said, according to the Associated Press (AP). Yanez said Castile was reaching for the gun and didn't listen to his instructions to stop.

"Like I said, because this happened with Philando, and when they get done with us, they are coming for you and all your interracial children". The defence also argued Castile was high on marijuana and said that affected his actions. "Are you kidding me right now?" Castile's girlfriend, sitting beside him as Yanez fired seven shots, said she recorded video of the scene because she feared that she and her 4-year-old daughter, in the car's rear seat, were in danger. There is shouting, and Yanez screams, “Dont pull it out!” before he fires seven shots into the vehicle, five of which hit Castile.

Yanez, who is Latino, testified that Castile disregarded his commands not to pull out the gun and that he feared for his life.

While Leary didn't spell out the reasons for denying their request Friday to review Yanez's testimony, prominent Minnesota defense attorneys noted the jury's instructions when the trial began to listen carefully, take notes and rely on their memories.

Her video went viral, sparking protests both locally and nationally about police use of force, particularly against black men. "This time we had to get it right", she said.

"We have 600 officers total in the City of St. Paul", Coleman said.

"I am so disappointed in the state of Minnesota", Philando Castile's mother, Valerie Castile, told reporters on Friday after the verdict was announced, the Star-Tribune reports.

Franken also thanked Ramsey County Attorney John Choi for bringing charges in the case. Many were outraged by what they saw as Diamond Reynolds' outwardly calm voice described Castile being shot after reaching for his wallet. Protestors were given the opportunity to march back up the ramps to leave.

The sickening incident, which was streamed on Facebook by Castile's girlfriend, sparked a series of violent clashes between police and protesters last summer - but even the footage wasn't enough to convict Minnesota cop Jeronimo Yanez, who pulled the victim over for a broken taillight.

He would not identify the two early holdouts, but said they were not the jurys only two black members.

The failure to reach a quick verdict reflects the infrequent convictions of police officers.

Yanez stared ahead with no reaction as the verdict was read. "He was just doing his job".

"This is a tragedy that impacts many people and lives in our community were forever changed", St. Paul Public Schools said in a statement.
