Afghan soldier killed, several USA soldiers wounded in incident at Army base

Kenny Thornton | 19 June, 2017, 16:12

An Afghan soldier opened fire on American soldiers on Saturday, injuring at least seven, the U.S. military said.

Authorities say an Afghan solider attacked and wounded US soldiers at a military base on Saturday.

In June alone there were two separate attacks on US soldiers by Afghans wearing an Afghan army uniform.

A spokesman for the USA military confirmed the attack, adding that early reports suggesting that Americans had been killed were incorrect.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in Achin last week, describing the shooter as an "infiltrator" of the U.S. Army.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in an email statement where he alleged that dozens of policemen had died.

Earlier announcements by Afghan Army spokesperson Abdul Qahar Araam claimed that an Afghan soldier had shot and killed four US soldiers inside the base.

On Thursday, the Pentagon said it will send almost 4,000 additional troops to Afghanistan in order to stop Taliban advances.

"Around 6:20 this morning a martyr attack was conducted by our mujahideen against a special forces base in Gardez, tia", he said in a statement.

Junaid Khan and Hasan Ali had been the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan and each had three wickets to their name. The first & second wicket partnership scored a worthy 118 runs when Fakhar Zaman was dismissed for 57 runs.

Afghanistan's Ministry of Defense is investigating the attack, says Abdul Qhahar Aram, head of strategic communication and public affairs for the 209 Shahin Corps.

The NATO-led mission said it has opened an investigation.

Unofficial sources said that 25 police and civilians sustained injuries by the attack.

"The first attacker blew up his vehicle at the entrance to the headquarters, opening the way for two others who opened fire on security forces, and another suicide bomber was shot dead", he said.

Most of the troops will help train or advise Afghan forces, while a smaller number of troops will be dedicated to "counterterror operations against the Taliban and IS", according to the Post. No US troops were killed.

Security forces are deployed at the site of suicide attacks and an ongoing clash between Taliban insurgents and government forces in the main police station in eastern Paktia province, Afghanistan, Sunday, Jun 18, 2017.

German and American troops are stationed in the province.

Atiqullah Amarkhel, a retired Afghan army general, said that the government is facing an agile guerrilla enemy and that United States needs to focus on cutting its "lines of supply and support and training" in Pakistan. The U.S. has around 8,400 troops now deployed to the country. The attackers were disguised in Afghan army uniforms.
