Jared Kushner to travel to Middle East for peace negotiations this week

Kenny Thornton | 19 June, 2017, 14:54

US President Donald Trump's son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner will travel this week to Israel and the West Bank to meet with Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) to try to restart peace talks in the region.

Kushner's visit to Israel will be the second one in two months.

Kushner will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netayahu in Jerusalem and with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah as a Trump envoy, along with Jason Greenblatt, an assistant to the President and special representative for global negotiations, the official told The Washington Post on Sunday night.

Jason Greenblatt, the Trump administration's top official in charge of Israeli-Palestinian peace, will travel to the region on Monday, and Kushner will join on Wednesday, according to the Journal.

Behind-the-scenes conversations have been taking place since the Trump trip, the White House official said.

"Our strategic and sole option is to achieve the two-state solution, the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital to live side by side in peace, safety and stability together with the state of Israel along 1967 borders", he said.

Officials in Saudi Arabia denied the report, however, saying that the sources cited in it are American officials, dismissing it as wishful thinking on the part of the Americans, who are eager to show results from President Donald Trump's recent visit to Riyadh.

In May, Kushner and Greenblatt both accompanied the President on his visit to Jerusalem and Bethlehem to discuss a peace agreement. "It's not easy. America stands ready to assist in every way we can". However, Trump was steadfast in his decision and said at the time that he believed his son-in-law was ideal for the job because he "knows the region, knows the people, knows the players". "Territories to continue the discussion about the possibility of peace".

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said just about the same last week, after finding out that the UNHCR might ask the International Court of Justice in The Hague to issue an advisory opinion on Israeli abuses of Palestinians' rights, echoing the increasingly hostile US sentiment vis-à-vis the UNHCR.

Further reports stated Kushner and Greenblatt are expected to lay down their plans for the peace agreement with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders and their senior advisers.
